This 3cd set dealing with all matters of the heart is much shorter,much more fun,easy to pack and incredibly enlightening and essental listening for any poor soul setting out on the long rocky road that is ......LOVE and all that lies therein.

The great majority of this album is perfect; the less successful tracks, 'I'm Tongue-Tied' and 'It's Only Time' (the latter being slightly schmaltzy)could, however, have been omitted and one feels that the album somewhat tails off after track 8. The cynicism of 'I Don't Believe You','I Don't Really Love You Anymore' and 'I Thought You Were My Boyfriend' is exquisitely incisive, and - far from being pretentious or overly-clever - Merritt's lyrics on these tracks are astute and introspective without being verbose.

I apologize for the pun, but it has to be said that if 69 Love Songs proved anything, apart from Stephin Merritt being a prolific and witty song-writer, its that genre doesn't mean much to TMF: at the heart of whatever premise of style that's been chosen to dress up the music in is a knack for writing entertaining, occasionally sublime pop songs. To judge Distortion against the behemoth that was 69 Love Songs is a bit unfair because they're not quite the same thing: Distortion is a regular 45 minute long-player, the kind most bands release during their careers, whereas 69 Love Songs is a three hour artistic statement; a tour-de-force of songwriting that, lucky for us, 'hit' far more often than it missed. Problably my favourite Magnetic Fields album, it really knocked me out when I first heard it. It's full of wonderful pop songs (I mean psycheldelic bubblegum pop, not chart music). And Steve Merritt's voice is just gorgeous, he doesn't rate himself as a singer but his voice is really special. It's unusual because he has a deep voice and in most modern bands singers have a mid to high voice (so there's hope for me then with the stuff I'm making). If you do like the Magnetic Fields I reccommemnd you hear this. Stand out tracks are ... oh I like so many it's hard to choose, but Strange Powers and the Flowers She Sent are just lovely. After the '69 Love Songs' box set surprised/delighted/entertained and moved me on a regular basis for oh... seems like forever, I decided to delve deeper into the MF back catalogue. This was the first I bought (hoping for more like 'Papa was a Rodeo') and whilst initially I was a little disappointed - The majesty of 'I have the Moon' and 'Two Characters...' soon won my heart. Having now bought the remainder, I'd recommend 'The Wayward Bus' as the next must have, but face it - in the end you're going to want to buy them all.

Anybody who bought 69 Love Songs and is hoping for more of the same with this set will be, initially at least, disappointed. Sung throughout both albums by Sunsan Anway and preseented in a wall-of-sound-done-cheap approach, the first impression is of murk. But when you begin to listen to it on its own terms, then it starts to appeal. Both albums were very short and you have about one hours music here... The songs are good and Anway's voice makes sense once you get used to it. One further oddity to get used to is that the songs are written from a male point of view, but sung by a woman. Odd, but easy to get used to. Less easy to get used to is the four and a half minutes of silence that separates the two album. Track 11 is, for some reason, their tribute ... Read More:

Stephin Merritt is undoutably a genius. This man must be the devil himself as he is living proof that the devil has all the best tunes. Get Lost is one of the best albums in my collection. Merritts voice is mournful and sombre in all the right places although he is capable of sounding urgent with expectation and hope on songs like 'Famous'. The standout has to be 'The Desperate Things You Make Me Do' with it's chorus of 'I dedicate this song to you/for all the desparate things you make me do/I'd like to beat you black and blue/for all the agony you have put me through. It really helped me through my last break up more than 100 playings of Alanis Morrissette's 'You Oughta Know' ever could. Rage should be sung about sweetly, not screamed to make its point.
