The last eight tracks (beginning with Dance the night away, which gave them a UK top five pop hit) summarize, in reverse order, the career of the Mavericks during the nineties. It includes three tracks from What a crying shame (the title track, There goes my heart, I should have been true), which remains the most popular of their albums in America. My favorite album, Music for all occasions, is represented by two tracks (Here comes the rain, All you ever do is bring me down). Two tracks from their commercial debut, From hell to paradise (the title track, This broken heart) complete a look at their music from 1991 to 1998.

This European compilation is based on an American compilation (Super colossal hits of the nineties) but has three ... Read More:

This is that jackpot album the Mavericks were waiting for. You'd be forgiven for not having heard of them, as until Trampoline, they used to be filed under Country & Western. Actually the band is from Miami, they just do their thing in Nashville!
With each successive album (and since I discovered Trampoline, I've bought the rest!) they've gone less C&W, and more mainstream. On this one they've added a great horn section to give a latin flavour, and boy do they have fun!
Raul Malo, their lead singer has one of those voices that's clear as a bell, and soars effortlessly into falsetto as Roy Orbison's did, and Chris Isaak's does now. The musicianship from all is absolutely top class on ballads, and the foot tappers.

"The Definitive Collection" remains the best place for newcomers to sample The Mavericks, but this 2004 live album would make a really good introduction as well. And fans will certainly want to hear this almost flawless live album featuring a horn-augumented version of The Mavericks performing most of their best and best-known material.

It's not spliced together from various recordings; "Live In Austin, Texas" was recorded in one "take" on June 2, 2004 at Stubb's Bar-B-Q in Austin, and The Mavericks' eclectic blend of rock n' roll, country, latin folk and sophisticated pop works well in this live setting...a couple of songs, like "Siboney" and "San Jose", never really get off the ground, but most of what's here is very good indeed. It's hard to ... Read More:

Music : What a Crying Shame
This is pretty well my best of the Mavericks, the one album that's got all my favourite tracks. If you like early Roy Orbison you'll love this. What a singer Raul Malo is! Sort of retro, but not; sort of country but more. What more can I say? Tears, Speechless! (private joke)

The Mavericks' reunion album, after a four year break and a patchy solo album from Raul Malo, turns out to be a bit of a disappointment for anyone who loved the Cuban-rock-latin influenced "Trampoline" or the humour and Tex-Mex tinged "Music For All Occasions". On first listenings it is very derivative of all four main albums that brought them fame, and a watered-down derivative at that.

Lead track, "I Want To Know" has the characteristic Maverick twangy guitar and beat, but it's a twee pop song worthy of a place on an Archies album. "In My Dreams" has the "What A Crying Shame" intro and similar tune. "Shine A Light" and "San Jose" have chugging latin beats; "Because Of You" is an old-fashioned 'broken hearts' country & western honky tonk number. There are ... Read More:

This outstanding retrospective takes a look at the music of the Mavericks, an excellent pop-country group from Florida. Presented in chronological order, the set opens with three tracks from their commercial debut, From hell to paradise (This broken heart, the title track and a cover of a Hank Williams classic). Their second album (What a crying shame) was a huge success in America, where it remains their most popular album. Understandably, five tracks are taken from that album for this compilation (the title track, I should have been true, There goes my heart, O what a thrill and a cover of All that heaven will allow, originally written and recorded by Bruce Springsteen).

While the Mavericks never again did as well in America, they built an international fan base ... Read More:

Music : From Hell to Paradise
The Mavericks recorded some material that they circulated to record companies when they were looking for a deal (and those recordings were eventually released as an album) but this album marks the official start to their career. On its own merits, this is an impressive debut although their subsequent albums (What a crying shame, Music for all occasions, Trampoline) are even more impressive.

The set opens with a very sad song (Mr Jones) about a man returning to a former home after many years, only to find it in a state of semi-dereliction. An even sadder song (Children) closes the set. In between, there are some other sad songs (This broken heart, The end of the line, Forever blue) as well as a Buck Owens cover (Excuse me I think I've got a heartache) but its not all ...
