I simply don't understand why this over-rated album is always held up as the benchmark of Morrissey/The Smiths' greatness. There are only two standout classic tracks on The Queen Is Dead - I Know It's Over and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out. Frankly Mr Shankly is a dire novelty song that sounds like it was written by Gilbert O' Sullivan, Vicar In A Tutu is unlistenably dreadful, Never Had No One Ever and Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others are totally forgettable fillers. Strangeways Here We Come is The Smiths album that stands up best to repeated listening - musically it's more innovative, lyrically it's less contrived. Don't get me wrong, these are great songs, but this time around they've been ruined by dreadful remastering. We didn't need another Smiths compilation anyway....of the existing ones, Louder Than Than Bombs has the most enduring track selection.

In a (relatively) recent article, Uncut Magazine assessed the best albums that Johnny Marr has been involved in. It gave "The Queen is Dead" the award of "Critic's Choice", but it gave "Meat is Murder" the award of "Uncut Classic". There appears to be a growing recognition that this album stands out an absolute classic. The inclusion of "How Soon is Now?" on the WEA reissue certainly helps. I consider this to be one of the finest songs ever written. It's a rather sad indictment of contemporary British music that the Smiths are somewhat "off-radar". A number of US artists have a more positive appreciation (The Shins and Of Montreal to mention a couple). Anyway, this album is a must. Buy it now. Loads of great tracks - read the other reviews. ... Living here in California and knowing this live concert recording would not be on sale until Nov. 25th, I ordered from the [always reliable] Amazon.UK. I'm a nut for live material, especially in the jazz idiom and realize that ECM seldom (if ever) releases a shoddily recorded live set. This recording is superb! I only received it yesterday, so I have only listened on headphones and can't state that the concert atmosphere ambiance will duplicate as well on my 10-speaker rig. But musically there are no grounds for disappointment. Each member of the trio blends into a cohesive whole and the tonal balance is perfect!

Once again, Michael has lifted us to the throne room to deliver praise. And he still does a great job of it. Like the previous two, this CD is a recording of a live worship event that Michael led. There are two differences from the previous releases. There are no studio tracks, here. More importantly, Michael wrote about half the song on here. A few originally appeared on his last couple of studio releases, but they fit right in here. Of the familiar songs, I really am thrilled to get "Mighty to Save" a song I learned this summer. And I can't get enough copies of "Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone)." Michael has arranged the classic hymn "I Surrender All" to switch from English to Spanish, which is kind of cool. From the first time i saw them on top of the pops as a 13 year old singing What differance does it make i was hooked. I was the lonely youth, the outsider, no-one else liked them but that was the best thing cause they were all mine, and i loved 'em and still do now. My favourite album was the debut album then Meat is murder, i had 'em all the same day they were released.There will never be another band like them and i am proud to say i was there. God bless 'em.

Was in the sixth form at school at the time of release-the girls were into Nik Kershaw and Howard Jones etc (yawn). Yes it is over-produced (too shiny) but get by that and the quality of the songs shine through.Apart from the "barnstormers" there are some real gems-"The Hand That Rocks The Cradle" and especially the poignantly beautiful "Suffer Little Children" which,I remember,was panned by the press because they did not know that Mozza had the support of the parents involved in the tragedy. A good starting point but The Smiths future releases were catchier and more mature-it was a travesty that they only had 4 years between first and last albums.
