This expanded remaster of The Stooges' 1969 debut is extremely welcome both for the quality of the remaster (it sounds absolutely brilliant) and for the quality of some of the extra material on the second disc. The contents are basically split into three: the original album on CD1, some unused mixes by producer John Cale which start CD2, and a kind of alternative version of most of the album taking up the rest of CD2.

For anyone that's never heard this, the original album contains three of Iggy Pop's all-time classics in No Fun, I Wanna Be Your Dog and 1969. These and Ann were the only songs they had when they arrived at the studio; they filled out the rest of the album with three new songs written in one evening (Little Doll, Not ... Read More:

How to write and record an album in less than 24 hours. You don't get albums like that anymore. You certainly don't get a band covered with pimples in a studio with a producer in the calibre of John Cale.

Even more so when the songs are only half baked ideas. Back then, however, it was revolutionary. Nowdays, even with tons of pimples on your face, you're still expected to sound polished to death, and worse, with no pimples at all.

The great thing in writing and recording within 24 hours - like this one was - is that you can capture a very specific mood and sound. The benefits: it makes the album homogenous, and the improvisations help in making the result intersting even after 20 listens.

Often times, when bands have a reunion, it's a dreary rehash of their old songs and almost 100% of the time, a live album. As a result, they always disappoint. Not this time. This is a good renunion album because there's new studio material contained within.

The presentation is simple, yet excellent... black on silver, utilizing their original logo and even the typeface employed on the first two Elektra records. And much to Iggy Pop's credit, it does not emphasize his presence here. This is not a solo effort, nor is it "Iggy and The Stooges" ...this is the genuine article. This is The Stooges. Writing credits are given to the three original members. Anything else would have merely been a vehicle for another Iggy Pop solo album.

Considering The Stooges' reputation as out of control, drug addled psychos, the most interesting thing about this box is the obvious tightness of the band. Rather than being the shambolic stuff of legend, (and not a few live bootleg albums), the studio/rehearsal tracks featured on the first 3 CDs prove otherwise.

The best sounding stuff can be found on CD 1, recorded at London's Olympic Studios in July 1972. While 13 versions of 'I Got a Right' may exhaust even the most fanatical of Stooges fans, lesser known tracks such as Gimme Some Skin, I'm Sick of You, Scene of the Crime, Tight Pants, and the only studio version of Louie Louie make exciting listening. The Michigan Tapes of March 73 also sound great, with searing versions of Search and Destroy etc.. and added piano ... Read More:

10.Fun House [VINYL] by: Stooges

Music : Fun House [VINYL]
There's a bizarre trajectory for the Stooges' career - quite apart from their multiple break-ups and reformations leading up to their current active status, in their heyday - 1969-1970 - no-one bought their records and the press hated them. Which makes their legendary status today all the more bemusing, named as big influences on a great deal of modern music. It makes you wonder how records everyone despised could have such an impact.

That is, until you listen to it. Funhouse, The Stooges' second album and last under that name until 2007, is an amazing record and probably one of the finest ever made. The combined result of three drug addicts (and one sober guitarist) and virtually no musical talent, Funhouse is a swirling, psychedelic masterpiece that was at least a decade ... Read More:
