As the title of the review says, if you dont have many stranglers albums in your collection buy this now, i have been a fan for 25 years so i know,and have many versions of all the songs on this album. However if you are thinking of buying a gift for christmas , the recipient will love this album , and why not buy the stranglers latest album SUITE XVI, a true return to form to please any fan that has an interest in probably one of the best bands to come out of the uk. Title says it all really. This is my favourite album ever. I bought it in 1977 and have played it ever since. Have been to see the Stranglers 14 times and they were superb pre-Hugh leaving. The 7 1/2 minute Down in the Sewer is my favourite track of all time. This CD also has the extra free EP tracks on it - excellent vfm!

With their 1979 album 'The Raven' the Stranglers produced what has to be regarded a true masterpiece which sounds as original and brilliant today as it did when first released: the mature sound they'd developed by the time they recorded this album is nothing short of astonishing, JJ Burnel's powerful, sinewy bass and Cornwell's wiry and intricate guitar-lines enveloped by Greenfield's arch and swirling keyboard and synth, underpinned by the solid but never ostentatious drumming of Jet Black. Both the single and album, 'No More Heroes,' were eagerly gobbled up by punk fans already familiar with the band's exhilarating mix of brutal bass and keyboard runs. While the single gained a unanimous thumbs-up as did the other hit, 'Something Better Change,' the album took some criticism for being a pale rehash of The Stranglers' debut effort. In truth, some of the lyrical content is too obviously rude for the sake of it, but the band still had some imaginative ideas, notably 'Dead Ringer,' 'Dagenham Dave,' and 'Burning Up Time.' 'School Mam,' which finishes the album, is almost vaudevillean, if tasteless. Bonus tracks bolster the album, however. My love of the stranglers has never died from the day I saw them live first in 1977, it was all great stuff and even the departure of Hugh could not deminsh my fire for them, Paul Roberts did well over the years giving some good showings on Stranglers in the night and About time, but there it stopped, Written in Red was a band lost and Coup De Grace showed that time had run out for Roberts, I skipped Norkfolk Coast even though the reviews raved on and on. Then came Suite 16, why did I buy it 9 months after its release I can't tell, but the first listen with a bottle of Jack Daniels late one night blew me away, this was the Stranglers I had missed for 16 years, the reason we all dress in black.. fantastic album but only 4 stars due to a lack of a couple of essential stranglers songs, eg. waltzin black, bear cage and i'd liked to have had a few more songs from their masterpiece, "the raven" included. still a really cool compilation though from a very underrated piece of british musical history. some of the organ solo's will make your head spin, and i have seen it make people nauseous and lunge for the stereo to turn it off, so beware! you might want to get "the collection 77-88" instead and give the later stuff a miss. it's just a bit tame compared to the older stuff.

Fabulous album from 1978! Ah... I remember when this album came out - bought it with the free EP and played it to death. That September (16th 1978) I went to see the Stranglers at my very first gig at Battersea Park. This album has stood the test of time. I still love almost all of these tracks. And Good value cos it includes the extra EP tracks (Old Codger, Mean to Me and Tits) but also Sweden in Swedish and Shut Up (b-side) of 5 minutes. Also, this cd is remastered and is excellent quality! Buy it - you know you want to!

'La Folie' marks a fundamental change in The Stranglers' approach to albums. Their first five studio albums are uncompromising, sometimes brutal. There are elements of that era here too: 'Everybody Loves You When You're Dead,' for instance, so true in the wake of the passing of Elvis (taken for granted for years until he died) and John Lennon (portrayed as a bitter eccentric in the media for most of the 1970s). The experimentation of 'Ain't Nothin' Too It' and 'Let Me Introduce You To The Family' also belong to the past. Their confrontational stance continues here, but they cease their attacks on whole nations and women as a whole. This is all relative, though, and individuals still come under attack. Indeed, look at all those peaches. Each and every one is oozing precious juice that will slake your thirst for fine and innovative rock fruit. There's a couple ("Something Better Change" and "All Day & All of the Night") that are not as ripe as the others, but the rest are firm and brightly coloured with brilliant hooks, imaginative arrangements, and marvellous lyrics. Make sure that you choose the most tasty peach of all, by lucky chance called "Always The Sun". Tracks one to seven cover the EMI/United Artists years, whilst the remainder cover the band's move to Epic.

Chances are you are already a Stranglers fan hoping against hope that this album has finally been released on CD. Well it has. However, if you're not a Stranglers fan but a seeker of genuine curios (like Van Dyke Park's 'Song Cycle' or Comus's 'First Utterance') then you have certainly stumbled across the right place. The film to this soundtrack by Stranglers keyboardist Dave Greenfield and bassist JJ Burnel apparently never saw the light of day. Now that sounds promising, doesn't it? You know it does.
