This is the compilation which defines the most criminally overlooked rock band in history. One of the greatest songwriters of the late 20th century, backed up by a troop of amazing guitarists, with Gorham, Robertson and Moore blasting out riffs and, more importantly, some of the greatest guitar solos ever throughout each song on this compilation. This band is a monolith of rock music and thankfully this compilation shows this very well.

my only quibble is that perhaps this shouldve been called 'the very best of' or something like that. In that case southbound and massacre couldve been added too, as well as the rest of the black rose album. The packaging is great also, as well as the music, and the story of lizzy is presented inside ... Read More:

Why oh why did they feel they needed to turn up the volume ?

I was so looking forward to this full-show version, but they went and mucked with the sound to the point where it is noticeably distorted. Compare the songs on the DVD CD with this release and you'll see what i mean.

Another loudness-war victim.....

Thin Lizzy has always been big because they are one of the most famous rock bands and the fact that they are Irish and that type of hype never appeals to me it's happend to bands like U2 & Snow Patrol, and they arn't as good as everyone says they are. But Thin Lizzy are a great irish rock n roll band. Made famour by their songs The Boys are back in town & Whiskey In The Jar, they are more then just those 2 awesome songs. This album for example, all the songs are excellent and some brilliant rock n roll riffs. With classics likes Jailbreak, Angel From The Coast & of course The Boys Are Back In Town. This is a brilliant way to start with Thin Lizzy if you're curious about the band, you will already know The Boys are Back In Town so you won't be dissapointed ... Read More:

Often ignored or maligned, 'Johnny The Fox' suffers only from having to follow an album widely considered Lizzy's best. I'm intrigued to see one reviewer saying this is rawer than 'Jailbreak.' In my opinion, there are more rough edges on that album and more bounce in the production of this one, a refinement that was to continue on subsequent releases.
'Johnny' is a confident, archetypal opening and 'Rocky' maintains the momentum. 'Don't Believe A Word' is one of my favourite Lizzy tracks, topped by a spiralling guitar solo. The title track is dirty and funky, allowing Phil Lynott to go all dramatic. 'Massacre' is one of Lynott's more intense folk tales. The two mellow tracks, 'Borderline' and 'Sweet Marie' are exquisite, the latter shimmering. 'Fool's Gold' and 'Old ... Read More:

This is undoubtedly one of the best Lizzy albums and indeed that last great one they did, after this we only saw/heard glimpses of Lynott's greatness. He was my hero growing up and this album was one of the reasons but it also shows the signs of the cracks that were starting to appear. Track selection is one bone of contention for me. I would've left off Sarah, it is a solo track not a Lizzy track, Get Out Of Here is filler and S&M is an interesting idea but not an album track and doesn't fit in here. Instead of these I would've added in Parisienne Walkways,
A Night In The Life Of Blues Singer, Dear Miss Lonely Hearts (the rocked up band version they occasionally played live), and last but not least I would add in King's Call this song is one of Lynott's best but instead ... Read More:

Thin lizzys eighth album is a laid back album in parts,a relexed, self assured piece of work with a rock n blues formula running through it.
The album opens with the brilliant 'soldier of fortune' with a delicious riff raking through it,scott gorham whips his guiatr skills into a frenzy here and lynotts bass plucks like a madman, lynotts vocals here and throughout are very mellow and enchanting, trapping the listener with their authority and almost storylike formula.
The title track hurtles in next with some great drive in the riff and the drum playing here is excellent, brian downey is a skilled player and this is his masterpiece, the song is class as well.A very autobiographical song follows in 'Opium trail' which is about well, the title says it all, this song sends shivers dancing up my spine.Speaking ... I find this album so enjoyable. It is a grower. You just cannot pick holes in Phils music, everything he does is brilliant or close to,and he seems to do it in a natural and effortless way it really does take your breath away at the mans brilliance. There is a good feel and a warmth to this album and you cannot but help being in a good mood after listening to it, more so than on Black Rose the previous album.I have listened to some of the bad reviews on this album and my advice is give it a chance .Phil was a proud man and his pride would never allow himself to produce a bad album.I find it vibrant, honest and innovating throughout.5 stars and forever unequalled.

If not their best, certainly the heaviest - with a hard as iron production, noticeably heavier drumming and some strong riffs and full on metal lead breaks. Even the keyboards duel with the shredding on the title track!
Highlights:
Thunder & Lightning - Very fast for this band, with great drums & awesome solo's. Lynnott's on real form, voice & bass wise here!
This Is The One - Great rhythm and chorus. Addictive!
Cold Sweat - Another heavy one, up there with Killer On The Loose! A guitar riff very worthy of the mighty Judas Priest!
Bad Habits - a bit lighter, with a great vocal from Lynott.

Metal fans will find a lot of Lizzy too light, but many will like this for it's extra edge & power (especially for 1983). It's not surprising Metallica cite these as one of many influences, ... Read More:

When I first bought this album back in 1974 I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. This was the first outing featuring the twin guitar sound of Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham so I expected something different, but I was surprised at how mellow it was. Ok so the band had changed direction before. In the Eric Bell era they went from a folk sound on the first two albums, to a heavier raw sound on Vagabonds so I guess I was anticipating hard rock here, but although it does contain a couple of heavier songs in Sha-La-La and Its Only Money, the guitars are played down somewhat with strings featuring on the title track and Dear Heart. This may have been due to the production of Ron Nevison which the band was allegedly unhappy with. There are also, what appears to be, a couple of fillers in Frankie Carroll and the instrumental Banshee. Don't let that ... Read More:
