Have to agree with several other reviews I have read about this record making more sense after hearing it live. Had my doubts on first hearing "The Hungry Saw", but Tindersticks have always been a slow burner of a band. I owned "Curtains" for maybe a year before it worked its' way into my soul. You need to listen to this album several times before it works its' magic; but it is well worth the perserverance. Once it clicks, "The Hungry Saw" is simply gorgeous.

The Tindersticks first album is still arguably their finest, mainly because the highpoints are much more numerous than on their following offerings. Added to that now is the bonus of early demo material, mostly related to the ‘proper’ versions found on the first CD, but a worthwhile addition to an already great package.
Strings, piano, brass and all manner of instruments plus Stuart Staples voice combine to make Tindersticks what they are, at worst a late night working men’s establishment/cruise ship combo, with the voice of Vic Reeves club singer (alright it’s a cheap shot, really the guy has one of those fantastically original voices), at best a band that sum up the atmosphere of a smoky evening in a city bar, capable of ... Gorgeous. As a starving tindersticks fan I was delighted to find this LP. As ever, this only goes to show what a fully developed, full-blooded, criminally underrated band the Tindersticks are. These tracks are lush, intimate and compelling. The solo version of the duet 'Travellin' Light' is spine tingling, as is the pavement cover 'Here' which is a must. This has relit my fire for the sticks. Please guys, please a new set in the nearish fuuture. 4 stars because Rented Rooms, Bathtime and Let's Pretend are missing and their my favourites. (Pettish, I'm sorry).

The fragile voice of Stuart Staples and the exquisite combination of the Tindersticks mini-orchestra return for their second album; and whilst it’s not as accomplished as its older brother, the wide range of styles across the tracks only serve to highlight the real gems from the rest.
Herein lies the only real problem with the album, in my opinion many of the tracks can easily be discarded as average and just fill the gaps between the extraordinary stand-out songs. The first of these is worth its weight in gold though – ‘My sister’, lyrically it’s a masterpiece in spoken word from the very start – ‘Do you remember my sister? How many mistakes did she make with those never blinking eyes? I couldn’t work it out. ... Read More:

This album nearly caused tindersticks to split up early. Stuck in a marvellous rut, they couldn't see a way out. It's a dilemma that hangs over this record. On 'Curtains', Tindersticks are desperate men. Even more than usual, the relationships it describes are fraught with frustration and confusion....rented rooms, another night in....wanting more than what you have even though what you have is wonderful, not knowing why you've done what you've done. An end is somehow always present. Occasionally, it's awful to listen to. Doomy, raw, despite the lush arrangements and beautiful melodies. Staples seems to write very personally. The songs are intimate, introspective, slow and almost too lush....probably why they never really were that popular. They were never going to ... Read More:

Tindersticks are not for everybody. The music they swirl is most certainly melancholy, but not at all depressing. Lead singer, Stuart Staples has the most quivering, fragile, mumbling, vibrating baritone you are ever likely to hear. His voice sounds like it is about to crack at any moment and that sound, even though it will be beautiful, will break your heart. And it will sink right into the music, which sounds a lot like something Burt Bacharach might come up with, if he were less distant.

I remember getting into the Tindersticks years ago, back in 1994, when there was a lull in Nick Cave releases, and Stuart Staples was a common antidote for such occasions (back before we had a more subdued Nick Cave). And I remember liking them, but eventually getting tired ... Read More:

I purchased this 'best of' because it was on special offer in a record shop that shall remain nameless. I didn't really need it but as I'm a would be tindersticks completionist, had to have it and was not dissapointed. The tracks are compiled perfectly, tweaking the ambience up or down a notch (not that there are so many up's, as any one who's ever heard them will know)to transport you to that dark, comforting place as only Staples and the boys can.
Bonuses include tracks that i had not heard before, such as the french language version of no more affairs, plus de liasons, which is so emotive and i think would be even if you had never heard the origional version in english, staples's voice seeps in to those long forgotten corners of your mind with that sweet, rich, ... They started well. I have been avidly buying all the 'sticks releases since I heard them doing 'My sister' live on a late night slot on R1. I think the second offering was probably their finest moment and a piece of creative genious. Since then the mediocre tracks have started to appear on the releases and we get more "Pretty Words (Simple Pleasures) and less Tiny Tears (Second album)I think this probably stems from the time when they found out they could flog us soundtracks.

Well this time they have succeded in packing a CD with mediocrity. If a mate lent you this and you didnt know the history I dont think you would listen to it more than once. I suspect some of you reviewers are listening to your memories rather than the music.

It,s so confusing . After releasing their debut called imaginatively Tindersticks the band released their follow up album in 1995 . A double album it too was called even less imaginatively Tindersticks , though it is referred to as The Second album by fans. Like i say it,s a tad confusing but i,m willing to forgive the band just about anything for The Second album is the finest thing they have ever done....a ravishing collection of consummate songs performed with the bands requisite scuffed majesty .
If anything this album saw the band expand their trademark sound from their debut . There is the usual array of guitars, violin, trumpet, vibraphone, glockenspiel , bassoon , organ, clarinet etc but the sound was considerably fleshed out with lush and dramatic string arrangements ... Read More:
