...something dreadful has been done to the audio. Load any track from this album into a wave editor to see exactly what I am referring to.

An obscene abuse of the dynamic range of CD. Record companies should be ashamed of mutilating music like this.

This album is probably one of the best places to start in your love affair with Tom Petty. Once you hear his music there's no going back. He has a wonderfully distinctive voice and can play both rocking upbeat songs, as well as laid back chilled out ones. There are so many brilliant songs on this compilation, it would be hard to pick out any one for special mention. Needless to say I highly recommend it!

I enjoyed every track on this cd but none of them are groundbreakers. This guy has a voice a bit like Chris Rea's but more upbeat which is inevitable given the fast tempo and smooth melodies he sings. If you like country, rock or folk music I think you'll like Into The Great Wide Open.

'Damn The Torpedoes' is Pettys third album and was written at a time when he was fighting a legal battle with his record company. The anger and frustrations are clearly evident on this album and make it all the more forceful and potent. This album, more than any other, has produced what are now classed as Petty's main hits. From songs like 'Refugee', 'Here Comes My Girl', 'Even The Losers', to 'Don't Do Me Like That', you have the makings of a Petty best of album on one CD. 'Century City' is a strong song about his travels to Century City near LA, the place where the lawyers for the court case were, it is a touch cynical (as you might imagine) and just exquisite rock and roll. Overall this is a great place to start with Tom Petty, although there is ... Read More:

'Hard Promises' is one of Pettys most underrated albums. It is often overlooked in favour of his earlier work or his mega successful later output, but this album has it's own sound and some great tracks. 'Waiting' is one of the most well known from this album and it really is an amazing track, but tracks like 'Woman in Love (it's not me)' are just as powerful and the lyrics of this particular track are just awesome. The Stevie Nicks duet 'Insider' is a brilliant listen and sits perfectly in the middle of this album. This isn't always the first album I go to when I want a hit of Petty, but at the right time and place it is just superb to put on and soak up. Worth a listen, not essential Petty, but definitely one to add to your collection as you're finding those ... Read More:

Originally conceived as a double album (but released as a single) 'Southern Accents' delivers another CD packed with that Heartbreaker sound and Tom Petty's unique songwriting and vocals. It is less accessible than other Petty albums but still has some tracks that stand out. 'Rebels' is especially good and although 'Don't Come Around Here No More' is one of the most well known from this CD, it's sound is the most unlike the rest of the album. 'Spike' is a light and fun track and the title track delivers some great lyrics. Overall this is a great addition to any Petty collection, especially as it is so often overlooked. There are better albums to buy if you've not tried Tom Petty before, 'Full Moon Fever', 'Wildflowers' and 'Anthology' are all good starting places, ... Read More:

To my knowledge 'Pack Up The Plantation' is the only live Tom Petty album. This has some great tracks on it, and although they are all amazing a few stand out as exceptional. 'Breakdown' will give you goosebumps as the crowd sing along and even harmonise! 'American Girl' is as great live as it is recorded and is an obvious crowd pleaser. The tracks with Stevie Nicks duetting are incredible and the version of 'Shout' is a full tilt, rock stomping affair and will soon slap a big old grin on your face. Until Tom Petty brings out another live album, which he REALLY must, this is the best place to hear their live sound and get some feel for the live experience. Of course I recommend some of the DVD's out there to get a better feel for Petty live and with some more up to ... Read More:

Music : Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)
Possibly his most under rated album, Shake off the odd coupling of 2 song styles - stripped down rock mixed with late 80's synths, and listen the the solid songs - Jammin me is balls out rock n roll, "It'll all work out" simply beautiful, makes his Jeff Lyne produced stuff sound plain lazy assed in comparison. "The Damage you've done" is a little JJ Cale and does the trick, as the album climaxes it gets even more garage rough necked rock n roll all the way. The title track being a magificent kick ass stones funk monsterBetter than most, an essential addition.
