this was a big favourite of mine, growing up in the 80's and early 90's. this album is by far the best reggae collection of ub40's. i also bought the ub40 dvd which has a few others which do not feature on the collection. if you want relaxing, soul trippin music this summer, then i suggest this album. totally superb.

this is a must for anyone who not only likes ub40 but enjoyed the 80's and its music.

before they settled into a blander niche, ub40 were a mighty british reggae band with the avowed intention of bringing dub into the charts and the mainstream. how they succeeded! tyler, king, food for thought and burden of shame were heartfelt political statements of their time set to infectious grooves, weird echoey dubs and ali`s unique vocals. the standout track has to be "madam medusa" which is the finest anti-thatcher record ever(they encored with it at glastonbury 1983 a few days after the tories election victory, introducing it as more relevant than ever), almost 13 minutes long with one of the longest and most atmospheric dubs ever committed to record- simply outstanding and worth the price of the cd on it`s own. signing off is simply one ... This is the best album Ive heard for a long time, Im a brummie myself so might be slightly biased, but this really is the best Ive heard UB40 sound since "who you fighting for?" its such a shame that the band were fragmenting whilst it was being recorded, but if this is the LAST album they put out as the original members then theyve gone out in style with no loss of the panache theyve displayed over the years.
God bless UB40, the songs have always made you think about the deeper stuff in life but its nice to think about that whilst also dancing.

It might not be roots, but UB40 has mellow pop reggae down to a T. This hit-packed compilation includes their early ska-based songs King and Food For Thought, plus all their later successes. Most of their biggest hits were covers of older classics, but they always did a good job in the interpretation. Red Red Wine, for example, is absolutely brilliant and the same can be said for Kingston Town, Cherry Oh Baby and I Got You Babe with Chrissie Hynde on guest vocal. I also love the humorous Rat In Mi Kitchen and their excellent interpretation of The Doors’ Light My Fire. Although not completely comprehensive, this compilation offers excellent value for money in that these tracks really were their greatest hits from a 20-year career. There’s ... Read More:

After the shock of just how well their almost garage-recorded debut album, "Signing Off" was received, UB40 found themselves a decent studio (not that the first album had bad sound in any way at all), found that they already had a reputation and considerable kudos amongst the punk/new wave fallout and laid down more of the same formula. As in "Signing Off", the band blended a rock steady, chugging reggae rhythm with Brian Travers' trademark deep saxophone and Ali Campbell's mournful, often incomprehensible voice to produce the UB40 sound. This time they expanded just a little to allow resident band toaster "Astro" free reign on dubby, vocally improvised tracks like "Lamb's Bread" and the intoxicating "Don't Let It Pass You By", with it brassy, almost funky ... What I hate the most is people's attitude's towards UB40. People who think they aren't a "proper" reggae band just because they aren't Jamaican! Well, any listens to this shows they can play it proficiently and give it their own identity, not least due to the distinctive harmonies of Ali and Robin Campbell. From the anti-Thatcher early stuff to the more commercial but melodic pop-reggae they play now, they never get boring or samey, although the cover of "I Got You Babe" is the only damp squib.

I'm a big UB40 fan and I can easily say this album represents the best of their studio work. The band has been haunted by the commercial success of their cover hits but this album clearly demonstrates that they can write and arrange great original work. "Things ain't like they used to be" is one of the best UB40 singles never released. Other standouts include "Promises and Lies", C'est Levie", "Higher Ground" and the two last tracks. Overall, one of the 90's most underrated classics. The Elvis remake of 'Cant Help Falling In Love' is highly recommended.

While it seems too simple to say this is just all three LOL UB40 recordings put together, that's exactly what this is. Most of us have scattered pieces of their music on tape or even vinyl. Here's a chance to hear it all on CD in one place. It's still fun music, the voice is still worth its weight in gold and it brings you back to your youth.

A tatty, strangled old moggy of an album.
It will become apparent that I am not a fan of UB40. I hastened to dismiss them after the atrocious `King' and the even worse `One in Ten', but in terms of abject dreadfulness, this is on another level entirely.
Oh so working class! Oh so socialist! Oh what a load of old cobblers. And oh, what a scandalous assortment of shabby, flabby, crabby reggae covers presented to the world with no energy, no warmth and no strength of emotion.
Sometimes when you're reviewing music from the past, the time elapsed tempers your initial hostility, but my anger towards 'LoL' ( ha ha, that's cheered me up....a bit.) has probably increased as the years have gone by. My resolve to detest this abomination into all eternity, ... Read More:
