Just a warning for anyone who takes the CD cover literally: while the LP version of this record was a double containing ALL the tracks from 'Signing Off', this CD loses 5 tracks: the instrumentals '12 Bar','Adella','25%' and 'Reefer Madness' and the song 'Little By Little'. This is a shame as the instrumentals are arguably preferable to the slightly dull Randy Newman and Billie Holliday covers, while 'Little By Little' is fantastic, with its apocalyptic lyrics a similar fusion of biblical/socialist rhetoric to those on Max Romeo's 'Revolution Time' LP. MI5 were certainly taking notice... I'm not completely sure at this point whether 'Dream A Lie' and 'Earth Dies Screaming' are available elsewhere in this form, but I ... Read More:

A tatty, strangled old moggy of an album. It will become apparent that I am not a fan of UB40. I hastened to dismiss them after the atrocious `King' and the even worse `One in Ten', but in terms of abject dreadfulness, this is on another level entirely. Oh so working class! Oh so socialist! Oh what a load of old cobblers. And oh, what a scandalous assortment of shabby, flabby, crabby reggae covers presented to the world with no energy, no warmth and no strength of emotion. Sometimes when you're reviewing music from the past, the time elapsed tempers your initial hostility, but my anger towards 'LoL' ( ha ha, that's cheered me up....a bit.) has probably increased as the years have gone by. I'm a big UB40 fan and I can easily say this album represents the best of their studio work. The band has been haunted by the commercial success of their cover hits but this album clearly demonstrates that they can write and arrange great original work. "Things ain't like they used to be" is one of the best UB40 singles never released. Other standouts include "Promises and Lies", C'est Levie", "Higher Ground" and the two last tracks. Overall, one of the 90's most underrated classics. The Elvis remake of 'Cant Help Falling In Love' is highly recommended.

After the comparative lack of impact of "Geffery Morgan" and the collection of dub tracks "Bagarridim", UB40 put out what was, to many at the time, "just another album from poor old UB40", a band who were seen as heading nowhere fast. Actually, "Rat In The Kitchen" is a fresh, vibrant album that shakes off the inhibitions provided by "Geffery Morgan"'s reliance of synthesuised percussion and dancehall grooves and is highly listenable and surprisngly infectious, hailing from 1986, a time when UB40, album-wise, were deemed to have lost it. "All I Want To Do" is a horn-driven upbeat opener that wouldn't have sounded out of place on "Present Arms"; as indeed is "You Could Meet Somebody" (despite the synth drums); "Tell It LIke It Is" is affecting, ... UB40 have done it again in their series of cover albums. This one i have to say personally is the finest of the three. All of these tracks tracks featured are all songs that should of been massive hits in their day anyway, but at least the ub;s still maintain by recording these tracks which thankflly give them a new lease of life.. From the quirky Melodians b side "Its my delight" to the smooth Ken ooothe classic of "crying over you" You will sing these trcks in your head all day. John Holts "My best girl" gets top draw crooning from Mr Campbell. while track 15 anthem Leagalise it must get a live blasting every time they play.. all i can say is go out and buy it ,and i promise you youll end up singing along. cant wait for the ... I really, really love this album. An amazing collection of ultimate covers, this album has a sound all it's own. Combining classic 80's drum machines and synths with soulful guitars and horns, it is the definitive electronic reggae album. While some believe this is against the simplicity of Reggae, combining the style with electronics takes nothing away from the purity of the reggae. The album is spattered with highlights and classics. The horn/guitar solo in "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)" is a moment of pure bliss. "The Way You Do The Things You Do" is perhaps the best example of TR-808 drum machines within a reggae constraint, the bass riff as pounding and groovy as if it were modern.
