Head First was the last Heep album I bought. Not paid any attention to them since then, but reading reviews here at Amazon, I took the plunge and bought Awake The Sleeper.

Good job I took the advice on offer, because this is a good, solid listen and so nearly a 5 star effort.

Good mixture of new and old sounds here, with that great Heep-unique organ accompanying songs throughout. It rocks from start to finish, but a special mention for What Kind of God, which is classic Heep to these ears.

Lads, don't think about drawing your pensions yet : there's obviously life in you all still!

Every Uriah Heep fan will tell you that this is the groups best at the time of release album. everything slotted together perfectly. a stable line up, great writing plenty of rehearsal before recording and a sense of well being.. the remaster has a fantastic selection of out-takes that other top groups would have begged stole bought rather than gathering dust in some vault..

First saw Uriah Heep in the early seventies on the Students' Union circuit when they were promoting this album. Great night, it was. Obviously, I still have the vinyl in pristine condition, but will be getting the cd version to protect the original classic.
To my mind, Mick Box is an outstanding guitarist, who can hold his own in any company, past or present.
So do yourself a favour, and buy it. You won't regret it.

This album has always been underrated. The album peaked at 28 in the uk and 31 in Billboard. It has a fine balance between rock and soft rock. This is due to Ken Hensley who is responsible for most songs. The song Rain is an example of a fine tune. It is also heard on his solo album Proud words on a dusty shelf (1973). Ken is still recording great albums. When i first finished listening the songs i said WOW..this is great. I played the album at least a hundred times.
Spider woman could have been a hit single but in my view but they released sweet Lorraine and that was no sucess. Blind eye is my favorite song. It is a dark song with great lyrics. Overall the album feels "dark" and the tension is pushing it to a great level. The album ends with the ... Read More:

I bought this album in 1975 when I was at school and loved it and still do.The atmosphere of a live rock concert is captured perfectly complete with guitar and synthesizer tuning, the odd bum note, "chewing gum being stuck on the boot" of the late David Byron and songs which feature the Moog "simplifier" and Organ (?) Brilliant! All the tracks are excellent and indeed some like "July Morning" "Sweet Lorraine" and "Traveller in time" sounding far better than the original rather 'Lack Lustre' studio versions. "Gypsy" is superb with both synth and drum solo's. A real Must-Have album for any fan of 70's rock. "it's going out live tonight so make a lot of noise won't you"! Fantastic.. Play it LOUD!!!

Having no great expectations of any Heep album after Magician's Birthday I was really surprised by this one. With the exception of the disappointing title track the songs get better and better as the album progresses, culminating in the atmospheric Rolling On and the up tempo and highly memorable Sympathy. I have been really pleased with this purchase and may be forced to sample later material in the hope of finding a similar gem.

Despite keeping an eye open for a Heep compilation that contained both 'July Morning' and 'Sweet Lorraine' for some years I still faltered when I saw this on Amazon. The logo, the derivative cover art... and then, having taken the plunge, my suspicions were further aroused when seeing that the same photo of the band is run several times. Here's the classic Heep line-up in colour; here's the same picture, only smaller and in black and white; here it is again and look! The Heep are now silhouttes and reversed. Bitter experience has taught me that CD's with sleeves so cheaply produced are often "rare" live versions of beloved songs or, worse, re-recorded.

Happily the old adage about books and covers applies. At less than four bucks this is value for money ... Read More:

I really like this album, it's a natural successor to the brilliant 'Sweet Freedom' which was a hard act to follow but I think that it does it very well.
Just how I like it.. nice and heavy with lots of special moments not least with the title track which is one of my favourite Heep tunes, a great melody which sticks in your mind and I often find myself humming it for no reason at all. 'Suicidal Man', 'So Tired', 'Something or Nothing' and 'We got We' are all great rockers, well played and produced but (agreeing with the previous reviewer) the star of the show has to be 'I Won't Mind' - a fabulous track full of Heep delights like slide guitar, heavy wah wah solo and some great singing from David Byron.
Gary Thain's bass playing really stands out here too ... Read More:
