Many people wondered what the outcome would be when Polish pianist Vangelis (pronounced Van-jealous) teamed up with Jon Anderson of The Yes. And the results were much better than expected. Vangelis improvised on the keyboards while Anderson sang random collections of words and the result was quite entertaining. Their real scoop of the project was managing to tape the late Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney for the song "Friends of Mister Cairo" in what turned out to be the last recorded performance of both actors. Since this album first came out well over 25 years ago - I was in Hong Kong at the time and remember buying the cassette in a little record shop in Wanchai - it has always been right at the top of my all-time favourites list, which for me is saying something considering my enjoyment of a number of different genres. The first track, I'll Find My Way Home, is full of positivity about the search for meaning and the benevolence of life, and slides effortlessly into the epiphanic and extremely dynamic State of Independence. These two tracks have been included in a number of Vangelis compilations and as a result have tended to overshadow the next two equally hypnotic songs, Beside and The Mayflower, the last of which features the mimicry ... Blade Runner changed my life, I was born in 1979 so wasn't able to appreciate the film until it had been out a good 13 years (I actually saw the director's cut first). I bought the original soundtrack in 1999 and it has been an integral part of my life ever since, I have just discovered by accident that this album has been released, I'm so excited I might wee myself... I apologise that this isn't actually a review but if you take my advice now to please buy this album then it was not a waste of your time to have read it. It is quite simply the most sublime soundtrack to a film ever made. A moment of clarity that only comes along once or twice a century...

The first solo album and a great epic championed to a rock audience by the greatly missed Alan "Fluff" Freeman. Good themes with lots of monk style cloister vocals, scary synth effects and three absolute highlights: the Jon Anderson sung "So long ago so clear" -one of the very best songs he has ever written (and I am counting all his Yes classics) and sung - beautiful. The other stand outs are a galloping synth theme which has a Ride of the Valkries type feel and the main theme itself. There is a great atmosphere throughout moving from themes of dread and joy echoing the work with his previous 60s group on the classic 666. This outstanding and astonishing album was recorded in 1978 and released in 1979. That's almost 30 years ago. Although when listening to it, one gets the feeling that it could have been released a couple of years ago. That's how fresh and resonant Vangelis' music can be. This incredible album starts off with a stunning opener "Chung Kuo". You almost feel like you're transported back to a forgotten time through China's Dynasties. You hear raging percussion and assorted sound effects along with more toned down keyboards. Then there's the enchanting and haunting feel of "The Long March" and the sensuously gorgeous "The Tao Of Love". It finishes off with "Himalaya", the longest track at 10 mins 53 secs which is very epic in feel and I just love ... Read More:

I have four musicians that I look out for Mike Oldfield Vangelis J.M.J and terry Oldfield Vangelis comes a quality second and In my view compilations are the best way to listen to Vangelis . The reason being that he can make some really good music but in the full albums that I have bought I have not been totally pleased, do not get me wrong there is some brilliant music on all the albums I own of Vangelis but also some dull music as well. This one has the best from a collection of his work and it shows his versatility and different styles he has It may even prompt you to check out some of the albums that the music has been taken from I have and bought albums because of tracks ... I got this not long after it's release and in my opinion it is disjointed as the reviewer said who called Mr Anderson a beegie. The single I hear you know, was so different and special back then, that I had to hear more. I wish I hadn't bothered, this vinyl was almost in mint condition apart from one track. Could have saved money and just bought the single. So I bought it on CD , primary reason to fill a gap in the CD collection, £9.99 from Andy's once again. I have played it once or twice since getting it, now thrice and my opinion hasn't changed, it is not good. I have to fight the urge not to put something better on. This CD was excellent first-time round, but now digitally remastered, it is even better sounding. Vangelis is a genius - no argument. Chariots of Fire will always remain his most commercial output. "Titles" is the main familiar theme. "Five Circles" is well known as well, having been added to compilation CDs. This CD is a soundtrack and nothing else but there are some ommissions from the film, for instance "Hymn" was used in the film but doesn't appear on the CD. "Hymn" can be found on a 1970s recording "Opera Sauvage" which is now available also on CD and is recommended. Watching the film recently, I chanced on hearing Vangelis calling on previous recordings and experiments. In "Abraham's Theme" I can hear "Reve" again from "Opera Sauvage". The main sequence ...
