Yes the price is good, but before you buy this make sure you look at the listings first (unlike me)!!! For example, no ABBA, no Queen, no Blondie etc. etc. etc. I'm very disappointed with it. The "101 70s Hits" one looks a bit better, but from now on I'll stick to downloading individual tracks, or gettings Greatest Hits albums from the individual artists.

i wanted a compilation that contained a bit of eveything, well this certainly does. it has eveything from the well known songs to the less well known and even speeches that were headline news of the day. it made me think what it must of been like during those terrible years of war for the soldiers and for those left behind to cope. i would thoroughly recommend buying this, it made my day listening to this wonderful war time music which we dont seem to get these days, how sad.

I can understand some folk purists wanting to hate this before they've even heard it, and it could have ended up as a complete dogs breakfast. Yes if they'd given the whole undertaking to Bellowhead it might have been a classic, but on the whole it's not turned out too bad, and there's something to be said for the eclectic nature of the thing. I'll have nothing said against Baby Gramps, he's a fine guitarist and that's no affectation, he really does sound like Popeye's drunken brother. Surprisingly of the "Big Names" Sting makes the best fist of his effort. I say surprising because he strikes me as the most unlikeable of people. In one collection listeners now have virtually his entire output in recordings ranging from the very good to the exceptional: this set is a tribute of EMI's long-standing commitment to British music (now sadly curtailed). Vernon Handley's magisterial cycle of the symphonies is beautifully played and recorded, and the major choral works and operas are all presented in excellent performances and recordings. Today you imagine this sort of stuff appeals more to adults than kids yet its somehow hard to understand how Sixteen Tons could have been a Childrens Favorite. Supposedly based on the results of requests you take their word for it. Many of these tracks were produced by the pre Beatles George Martin-Mandy Miller and Bernard Cribbins for example.

This album has has never been far away from my CD player since it was released around 23 years ago. The music surprised a lot of people at the time because it wasn't completely representative of the Abba style. In the theatre the music is completely overwhelming. I managed to see the production 3 times, twice with the original cast and that is why I would recommend this recording above all others. Some of the players are different but the American, Russian & Florence were as heard on the CD's. The Swedish touring version mentioned further down is excellent, in that it includes the ending as we knew it & other bits and pieces. Still vocally this is the superior version and no one has sung Florence better than Elaine Paige. A pity it wasn't recorded ... Read More:

I could lay my hands on, it's been a great pleasure to hear the traditional English style of singing used to such heart warming effect.
