The tracks on this cd are excellent and well worth the money. I get worried about the packaging of this sort of disc though because it reminds me of Tesco's attempt to sell wine to the masses by renaming a mediocre chablis as 'Good with meat' or whatever. If this was called 'Fine Opera' or 'An Opera Sampler' then I'd be a lot happier but the dumb approach of 'The Only Opera Album You'll Ever Need' makes me cringe. Once again though: the music is very good and the performances are excellent on the whole.

Once I had actually listened to this CD, I was very pleasantly surprised. Far too often, there is an inversely proportional relationship between the prettiness of the face on the CD cover, and the quality of the performance. Vesselina Kasarova is undoubtedly a very fine singer, and the orchestra is tastefully conducted by Arthur Fagen, but for any true Opera fan, this recording is a must have for one reason. Juan Diego Florez. When this recording was made, he was only 25 years old, but you would never guess. His voice has everything, a phenomenal technique, effortless high notes, superb diction, wonderfully lyrical phrasing. There are only a handful a Tenors this century of whom the same could be said. I will mention him in the same sentence as ... Read More:

Just chiming in to say I totally agree with Kotuszka's review.

It really is refreshing how Vesselina Kasarova really tells you the story of each Lied.... most other singers just 'talk about' the story. She tells it to you personally. Most engaging, and that voice is so expressive.

Friedrich Haider is a wonderful piano accompanist, too. Totally in sync with his singer and refuses to draw attention to himself.

The only slight minus is that the recording microphone is too close to Kasarova. I find the effect of being able to hear every sound she makes ...breathing and stuff, rather engaging. But that could be a bit of a turn off for some.

This is a live recording from the ROH's season opening concert performances (10, 13 Sept 2005). Great sound quality, tho. Audience is awesomely quiet.

The version performed is the 'unabbreviated new critical edition' by Mary Ann Smart. Just short of 3 hrs (including 3 ballets) on 3 CDs... and an extra CD of highlights from other Opera Rara 'bel canto' opera recordings. Wonderfully thick booklet with full synopsis, history of opera and performances (in English, French, German, and Italian), and libretto (French & English). A really nice package.

Despite having 5 acts, it is a fast moving opera. Based on a historical-fiction of Sebastien of Portugal and his ill conceived invasion of Morocco. His entire army is annihilated ... Read More:
