Not as some have said, the original version of 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End' but by far and away the most concise. It's all you really wanted to know about Henry Rawlinson in an easy to swallow, beautifully performed hour.

And I've enjoyed this hour for what must amount to weeks in repeated plays. Even now, a word or phrase can suddenly shine out as a meaning or reference becomes clear. The narrative and songs are examples of Vivian at his very best and it comes as no surprise that this album continues to enthrall listeners decades after it's first release.

It's actually a condensed version or fragment of a much bigger series of recorded works which were performed in an equally erudite and mellifluous fashion for radio. ... Read More:

After the Bonzos Stanshall's career stuttered from disc to disc .
Sometimes - as with " Men Opening Umbrellas Ahead " - you marvel that the disc ever made to the market . Brilliant in parts but thrown away .
Teddy Boys Don't Knit shows what he could do with a great producer and great musical support .
The disc has its downbeat side " Calypso to Collapso " but features some truly original masterpieces , Slave Valse , for example , which are quite ignored in comparison with the Bonzo hits .
If only he could have done more like this . He was truly inimitable

Okay so this is not as polished as Sir Henry at Rawlinson End, or indeed any other of the great Vivian's work but it was recorded over a Bank Holiday and one suspects that lack of funds lead to it being handed over for release rather than being worked up into a finished article. I would, therefore, encourage you to consider this as a work in progress. There is mostly only sparse instrumental accompaniment to the Ramblings of Sir Henry but I would much rather have this imperfect work than not. Vivian Stanshall a troubled soul who struggled through depression and self doubt which is a cause of great sadness to many, especially to those closest to him. But the flip side was his brilliant flights of fancy and enormous creativity. Even as a child I always knew ... Read More:

This is one of Stanshall's solo efforts, along with 'Sir Henry at Rawlinson End', a followup to a track on the Bonzos' last album. This disc is a clear continuation of the directions Stanshall took while the Bonzos were together, but is less coherent (you get the sense that the other band members were a restraining force...) This album also has a much more personal feel to it, especially with songs such as 'The Tube'. Despite the abscence of Neil Innes' melodies, there are plenty of solid tunes on the album, along with some rather abstract sections. This is a worthy disc, and a valid contribution to the Bonzo legacy, but be warned: some of the material here is far stranger than even the Doo-Dah Band's most peculiar moments... enjoy!
