Great performances and good songs but the sound is a bit mushy if compared to the Remasters of Trouble and Love Hunter.

This latest Whitesnake release grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go... from the opening riffs of Bad Boys to the last notes of Take Me With You. The album builds to a crescendo with Fool for Your Loving, Here I Go Again and Still of the Night... these are the definite climax! And just when you think it's over, you get a second CD with more live tunes (a sort of 7-song encore!) And that's not all... the album culminates with 4 brand new studio tracks. The Coverdale-Aldrich collaboration is truly an inspired one. The tracks are reminiscent of "classic rock" but with a fresh, modern twist, which Aldrich brings to the table. There are some really great and original guitar sounds there! This album has it all... so cherish the past, embrace the ... Read More:

After two solo albums, David Coverdale assembled a band of substantial talent and experience that would prove impossible to ignore. Jon Lord's keyboard work in particular promotes a sweeping, expansive sound for the early stages of 'Love Hunter'. The album is a triumph for style rather than substance, as the material is good but not great.

'Long Way From Home' is something of a surprise opening. It's hardly rock and roll in nature, more like one of those pop/rock songs designed to appeal to a mass market. Though quite striking, it's no 'Since You Been Gone'. 'Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues' and 'Help Me Thro' The Day' are much more substantial, slow burners given atmosphere by background organ. The quality thereafter is variable. ... Read More:

The idea of an "unplugged" Whitesnake album is appealing, and "Starkers In Tokyo" does feature a lovely rendition of the classic Deep Purple-ballad "Soldier Of Fortune".

But most of the songs don't really work too well in this setting. Coverdale's vocals are excellent, but Adrian Vandenberg's lone guitar just doesn't provide the musical backing that these songs need, and the extremely lean arrangement doesn't suit songs like "Too Many Tears" and "Here I Go Again".

Vandenberg picks more than he strums, and a rhythm guitar or two (and preferably an acoustic bass as well) would have worked wonders.

There are some good moments on "Starkers In Tokyo", but this is mainly an album for serious Coverdale-fans. Casual listeners probably ... Read More:

Some of the criticism of this album in other reviews is seriously misplaced. The reviewer who points out (correctly) that this CD was recorded digitally in the 1st instance has clearly not played this new remaster back to back with the original. The remaster wipes the floor with the original due to the obvious advances in digital technology over the 20 years since the original release. The other reviewer who states she won't buy the album because "Slow an Easy" is not on it obviously doesn't realise that it was never on the album in the 1st place! So ignore these gripes and look at the positives- the music sounds awesome, Coverdale is on fire, and the revamped packaging is fantastic. And what's more, you get the original vidoes with Tawny Kitaen for good measure! ... Read More:

Restless Heart has generally received luke warm to poor reviews from most Whitesnake fans and even David Coverdale himself. David's appraisal of the songs contained on Restless Heart in Classic Rock was less than flattering.

But, it's not too bad. I have only listened to this album a couple of times but David's vocals, as usual, are top notch and the tracks are heartfelt. Give it a go. The song, Restless Heart, really grows on you. The last reviewer described David's voice as "chocolate vocals". Very accurate indeed.

This album is nowhere near as heavy or catchy as 1987/Slip Of The Tongue but is a lot bluesier.

This classic album was recorded seven years before Whitesnake broke through in America, having changed their sound from hard, bluesy rock n' roll to big-haired pop metal, so the version of "Fool For Your Loving" that kicks off "Ready An' Willing" is the original gritty rocker, not the slick, keyboard-laden and slightly evil one from the 1989 MTV video.

Back in 1980 original Whitesnake guitarists Bernie Marsden and Mick Moody played big, bluesy guitar riffs and short, sparse solos, Coverdale didn't yet bleach his hair, and the music was raw and powerful, more Deep Purple than pop metal and poodle-rock.
Indeed, "Ready an' Willing" goes from highlight to highlight:
"Fool For Your Loving", the hard-rocking "Sweet Talker", the superbly groovy "Ready ... Read More:

... and I missed them! I didn't find Whitesnake until the release of '1987' when rock music collided with my teenage years so my experience of Mr Coverdale and crew was decidedly American in bias. Not necessarily a bad thing, I loved those albums and they certainly presented his 'whisper to a scream' style perfectly.
However, some years later, with money in my pocket and having rediscovered Mr C after a break of some years, I invested in all the early albums. What a treat! A richer, more bluesy sound and an even better showcase for his vocal range with none of the aggressive guitar that so characterised late 80s rock music.
Many of my favourites are here - 'Love Hunter', 'Ready and Willing' (always!), 'Fool for Your Loving' - in a perfect 'best of the early ... Read More:

This early part-Whitesnake, part David Coverdale solo-release is a solid mixture of rock and blues, much less flashy than Whitesnake's late-eighties pop metal outings, and with a lot more groove.

It is not Whitesnake's most remarkable album, and it is not an absolutely necessary purchase for Whitesnake fans, either, especially since the two best songs ("Come On" and "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City") can both be found in excellent versions on "Live...In The Heart Of The City".

But that's not to say the rest isn't worth a listen. There is nothing here to rival the original versions of "Love Hunter", "Here I Go Again" or "Fool For Your Loving", but songs like "Bloody Mary" and "Only My Soul" are sturdy, ... Read More:
