After two solo albums, David Coverdale assembled a band of substantial talent and experience that would prove impossible to ignore. Jon Lord's keyboard work in particular promotes a sweeping, expansive sound for the early stages of 'Love Hunter'. The album is a triumph for style rather than substance, as the material is good but not great. 'Long Way From Home' is something of a surprise opening. It's hardly rock and roll in nature, more like one of those pop/rock songs designed to appeal to a mass market. Though quite striking, it's no 'Since You Been Gone'. This double cd is worth buying just to get the newly remastered American mix version of the Slide it in album alone which is basically tracks 2 - 11 on disc one, and the record company cleverly maintained the original running order of the American mix release, I truely feel its Whitesnake's last great album while still maintaining that bluesy style they are so famous for but giving it a really fresh rocky sound on the American mix, and until now have been searching high and low for a cd version of this let alone for it to be remastered, I was jumping around the room with delight when it came through the door I love that album that much, tracks like Give me more time, Guilty of love, Slow and easy, Slide it in are classics which still sound great today.

I am an old Whitesnake fan from the beginning and I had kind of left off the band when Vandenbergh left. I picked this album on a whim and man was I amazed. The band reinvigorates old classics like Walking in the Shadow, Don't break my heart again etc. I think it is due to David - always in top form, does not age - and especially Doug Aldrich who made me forget the goold old Moody-Marsden days. This album is a must have for all Whitesnake fans even those who like me made a pass on their most recent stuff.

It's strange to see how split opinions are on this album but I'm sure David Coverdale would rather elicit strong views either way than just have everyone say "Yes, it's okay I suppose". Personally I wasn't overly impressed when I first played it. In fact I was very disappointed. However, as Whitesnake played such an important role in my musical development I persevered for a couple more listens and boy am I glad I did. While it is not perfect, it is still a very strong addition to the catalogue. I'd advise those of you who binned it earlier to revisit it and you might just realise that you made a mistake.
