I bet this was a fantastic live show - shame it sounds so flat on the CD!

Unlike the other reviewer I came to this recording as a fan of Willie Nelson. I think Willie sounds pretty good on the whole - I just wish there was a bit more of him! His regular harmonica buddy, Mickey Raphael, is the real star of the show for me - his soloes shine above everyone else!

The first two tracks, "Bright Lights, Big City", and Willie's own "Night Life", are the highlights for me. The lowest points being the two tracks associated with Hank Williams ("My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" and "Nobody's Business"), which, for me, don't seem to work in this jazz setting.

All in all, it's not a terrible album but certainly not ... Read More:

A nice selection of songs here but hardly the Best Of!

Yes, poor old Willie has been compiled more times than you can shake a stick at, but to call this CD "The Best Of" really is unfair! Don't get me wrong, these are 17 great tracks but there is so much missing: Night Life, Hello Walls, Crazy (yes, Willie wrote this one!), Funny How Time Slips Away (and this one!), Me And Paul, Shotgun Willie, On The Road Again, and Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, just to name a few.

If you want a cheap starter collection, this is fine, but do yourself a favour, pay another two quid and you can get the 2 disc set "The Essential Willie Nelson" with a massive 41 tracks: it's still not really the true 'best of' but it's well worth ... Read More:

Willie review #1:

I,ve never written a Willie review before and am not sure whether I should apply different criteria to septegenrians. Whatever I'll have whatever Willie's smokin these days because it obviously works. Another year - in this case 2004- another blinder of an album. The issue of duets always seems to bring me out in hives but Willie can generally pick em. I take it that he makes everyone fill out a questionnaire, the first question being "can you keep up with me". On this CD Norah Jones again shows (surprisingly) just what a good singer she is. Similar in tone to her duet with Ray Charles she pulls it off with grace (ooerr missus). Willie inhabits songs like warm jumpers although I doubt if Willie has ever had to wear one ... Read More:

Country music's Willie Nelson never one afraid to try something new has come up with a real gem of an album in "Countryman". For anyone trying to decide if the crossover between country music and reggae works grab yourselves a real treat and chill out to Willie's offering here. From new version's of old reggae song's such as "Sitting In Limbo" to the brilliant "Darkness On The Face Of The Earth" this album work's and work's damn well!
Ten year's in the making, I for one hope it's not another ten year's before the next helping of Country Reggae! If I could give it ten star's I would, listen and enjoy!!!!

I purchased this having seen Willie years ago on the George Hamilton show with his long hair and Trigger his aged guitar. I wasn't sure whether Country was for me but I knew a few tracks and thought I would give it a try. It is superb in every way and is not the usual Country Music that we hear from Dolly and others. This is more Country Blues and some of the lyrics are sad and poignant whilst others are good fun. Willie is very versitile and I love this album and have since purchased others and DVD's of his concerts. I have yet to be dissapointed,a true professional and entertaning musician withso much energy. I am definiely a convert to Willie Nelson but I would say I am not a convert to Country & Western Music. My Mum, now 83, is hooked having never heard ... Read More:

Marvellous music, I have no doubts about that, but who is this box set aimed at? The hardcore fan will have the majority of tracks (and can download what they don't already have) and it's probably a higher cost than the casual listener will want to pay, especially as there are any number of very good Willie Nelson compilations available! And to be honest, it's not the best selection of tracks to my mind - far too many duets! And to add insult to injury, who on earth wants to pay for biodegradable packaging?

What a missed opportunity! There are alledgedly hundreds of unreleased Willie Nelson tracks in the vaults - four CDs of new music would be a much better way of celebrating the great man's life to my mind!!

So, it's five stars for the ... Read More:

Being a huge fan of Willie, Ray and Merle already I went and bought this the moment it was released. On it's own merits the album is very enjoyable to listen to, particularly the first disk which in my opinion has teh best range of songs. All three artists sound great together and, unsurprisingly the songs sound pretty much like a cross between Willie & Ray's 'Run That By Me One More Time' album, and Willie & Merle's 'Pancho & Lefty' album.

Merle Haggard said that this album is dance country music, so if you like pure country music you'll probably notice the perhaps over-reliance on the harmonica and steel guitar on most of the songs. It's not this type of music that made these musicians into the legends they are today.

But like I ... Read More:

This is one of those rare pieces that is a set of ballads within a ballad, shaped as an album. I bought this when it first came out in vinyl and thought it one of the best set's I'd heard, and for me, the best Willie Nelson has ever done (all of it is great). Having been raised in the west and lived in Montana, the music resonates the country it describes. If you are a Willie fan and don't have a copy of this, I can't understand why.
