3.7 Seconds by: Youssou N'Dour, Neneh Cherry

This is a beautiful single and I am sorry it wasn't a bigger hit. Combine the electric voice of Youssou N'Dour with the delicate strength of Neneh Cherry and you have a song of such vibrancy you won't know what to do with yourself. Youssou sings his part in French but it blends in so well with Neneh's part, which is in English that you don't notice that this is a song being sung in two different languages. The words are enough to make goose pimples run and up and down your back. I mean how can you not listen in awe when you hear Neneh sing, "When a child is born, it's not aware of the colour of the skin it's living in."
An absolute gem of a song that I hope one day will be appreciated for its beauty and harmony.

This is the music that originally earnt Youssou N'Dour international attention & celebrity. Many of his admirers, myself included, see this as his golden period before he attracted Peter Gabriel's attention & influence. I can still remember going to Senegalese student/immigrant parties in France, in the 1980's, & the highlight of those nights was always when the title track of this album was played, the dancing became even more superb, & the emotion of those "Immigres" was palpable. Senegal has long been respected for her musical heritage & this album was a landmark in it.

OK, this album does have flaws, notably the two pretty awful tracks where N'Dour unwisely accepts 'help' from Wyclef Jean, but the rest of it not only works well but is, in places, simply breathtaking. 'Wiri' is a superb opener with an infectious rhythmn that will be bouncing around in your head all day within no time while the second track, 'Birimi' is my favourite on the disc. Wonderful female backing vocals support a brilliantly chant like chorus and the whole effect is just sublime. It's only fault is that it is about 5 minutes too short! Of the other highlights 'My Hope is in You' is a wonderfully uplifting song of N'Dour's faith in the youth of the world, 'Don't Walk Away' (with Sting) is a beautiful guitar based song where N'Dours voice ... First time I heard this there were a few tracks that stood out. But after a few listenings all are unique in their own way. I have not listened to my brother Youssou before but he has certainly helped me to look into the power of sufism, its spread of Islam in Africa and the Sheikhs he describes with such love. Well worth buying for all people of the world.

This was the album that gave N'Dour an international audience. It opens with the lilting The Lion/Gaiende, followed by the soulful Shakin' The Tree where Peter Gabriel contributes vocals, the lively, fast-paced Kocc Barma and Bamako, a jazzy track.

Old Tucson has a charming R&B flavor, Macoy is atmospheric and subdued, while Sama Doom is another polyrhythmic delight. N'Dour sings in both English and Wolof, his native language, but his voice is so expressive that language doesn't matter much.

The instrumentation and backing vocals are elegant and graceful throughout - full marks for expert production. Although not quite as magnificent as his classic album Eyes Open, The Lion is very accessible without compromising the integrity of the artist's ... Read More:
