This CD was given to me by a friend as a birthday present - was he trying to tell me something? Zbigniew Preisner is a film composer. His Requiem is his first large-scale classical work and is written in two parts. The first, the requiem proper, is 31 minutes in length; the second, the life, is 36 minutes. It is dedicated to the film director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who died in 1996. Part one features six soloists, a string quintet, an organ and percussion. It was recorded in Warsaw Cathedral and in a church in Krakow, so there is a great atmospheric echo. I used to watch this film many moons ago when i was younger, and ive since rediscovered it, only to find that this film is as good as, if not better than i remembered it! The setting is beautiful and the Yorkshire dales give the film a wonderful sense of mood too. The acting is brilliant. Maggie Smith is class all the way as Mrs Medlock, and John Lynch is a surprisingly good choice as Lord Craven. The children too are brilliant here - most notably Andrew Knott as Dickon, and there is an utterly charming romantic attraction theme between his character and that of Mary Lennox which runs through the film! <3 All in all, a wonderful film that is sweet and innocent, just like every childhood should be :) xxxxxxxxxxxxx Read More:

To say that the soundtrack of "La double vie de veronique" is a masterpiece is underrated. I listen to this CD religiously in the past so many years since it was released more than a decade ago. Preisner's music is extremely powerful and touches the heart of almost anyone in any age of any cultural background. In particular, the voice of E. Towarnicka is the soul of the whole album. Her voice is captivating and perhaps poignant that it gives insight of the complex emotions the movie characters are going thru. The movie is highly recommended as well, but even those who might not have enjoyed the movie itself also manage to appraise the work of Preisner.

The score gets a very neat representation on this official UK release, with 20 tracks and a total of 54.54 duration, containing some excellent music which wasn't on the film, or was there but in different form, as well. A marvellous and memorable main theme which gets all kind of renditions and restates, piano, guitar, marvelous choir, solo soprano, Hammond organ, bass guitar, saw, harp and warm string orchestra along with some dark but discreet electronics make up for one of the most dark, emotional and shocking scores. Until 1999 the Polish composer Zbigniew Preisner was known only for his film soundtracks - chiefly for films directed by his friend and collaborator, Krzystof Kieslowski. Then came the remarkable 'Requiem For My Friend' and now there is Ten Easy Pieces, a modestly titled album of exquisitely played piano works. The titles of the pieces offer clues about the inspiration behind them - Meditation, To See More, About Passing, A Good Night Melody. In the sleeve notes Preisner offers a further clue - "I like very much all the music recorded by Keith Jarrett...maybe it inspired me to do something similar." It is a refreshing change to have a collection of arias on a CD with a title that actually bears some relevance to the contents. This is indeed a prayerful collection. That means, of course, that you have to be in the appropriately contemplative mood in order to appreciate it. Another nice change is that the orchestral accompaniment enhances the singing rather than just tagging along as an afterthought, which often seems to be the case. It is fitting that James Conlon gets equal billing here. This is splendid singing to splendid music. Sumi Jo is comfortable in any language and in a broad range of styles. I was uncertain how she would tackle songs like Amazing Grace and Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child. I need not have ... Read More:
