whoever wrote the 'whats on this cd' blurb mislead me to buy this item - I needed the WHOLE of the Messiah AND THE WHOLE of Faure's Requiem and reading this blurb you think you have it - but guess what - there are only extracts - the titles given are just for the whole work - not the individual piece of music - so I cannot learn the pieces for two concerts I am performing in before Christmas off this - very misleading. Sorry - but it is not the only album Ill ever need.

Ever since i was introduced to Classical music by my father at home and in music class at school i have appreciated the classics ability to soothe the mind, to be able to sink back and allow the mind to be massaged through the ears so as to be able to forget much of what troubles us, and Radio FM have again provided me with a beautiful continuity of music on these CDs to do just that. Gone is the need to turn the LP and for most of us we have the ability to place all the CDs in to a system and listen for hours on end, and with this set gone also is the need to skip tracks, each seems to flow naturally from the previous and merge nicely into the next, while the composers can take pride in their music, Radio FM can be proud of their management of all ... This is an interesting collection but it is important to note that this is a box set of Bach played on instruments of the time. The Flute with Harpsichord sets and Organ were excellent but for my personal taste the Harpsichord transcriptions, whilst played flawlessly, became a little too much. However for those who want the authentic sound of Baroque this set is perfect.

I like this "Missa Solemnis" recording best because it is fast and dramatic. "Missa Solemnis" sounds more exciting when it is fast. Compared to Klemperer's recording, Zinman makes it more thrilling. True, the "Benidictus" is played fast as well, but that does not bother me because it still sounds like a shiny bronze. I particularly like the way how Zinman conducts the "Gloria" because it's the most lively bit of the choral work. It is also sung with a lot of life and beauty.

Only a snob can be aghast at the mere existence of Classic FM. It may be easier to excuse people's protestations at the idea of putting classical music into any form of list (although it is a lot of fun). Who can really complain when you have, on one album, 30 of the most beautiful and inspiring peices of music ever written. As an adjunct to this is the inevitability of these mesmerising pieces becoming so tired and mundane after their inclusion on every Best Of CD, every car advert, every daily Classic FM schedule! And so the Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana loses much of its beauty and becomes bland and almost self-parodying; Pachelbel's Cannon sounds as uninspired and dull as any modern dance track; and the Planets Suite begs for a ...
