It's common to find good value box sets from labels such as EMI Classics, Brilliant Classics and Warner Classics, but not so often on the Sony label. In general, the bigger the set the better the value, with collections of more than ten discs often falling into the bargain category of under £1 a disc. This collection though represents not only value for money but also provides pretty much all of Stravinsky's lifetime works (he composed around 127 pieces) in a compact box of just 5cm width thanks to the CDs being supplied in card sleeves. This is a great CD for kids. I've bought a few as presents and am told they get played again and again. My kids love it.

Despite the inevitable duplication - du Pre fans will almost certainly already have the Elgar and Haydn concertos - this is undoubtedly the definitive Jacqueline du Pre collection, providing 17 CDs of cello works by a huge array of composers from baroque (Bach and Handel) to Beethoven and the romantics and modernists such as Chopin & Bruch. and I like the box too: I can always pick it out among the other VW sets ;-) A wonderful evocative 3rd, a tense war study. Not very pastoral, nor bucolic or lyrical: I do not agree much with Vernon Handley's interpretation. Rather it is the past remembered, resigned melancholy that something is not quite right, yet with self-discovery and steely determination that is discussed and evolved by the soloists. Never forget that a war demands and makes a different mindset we do not understand. I find Rued Langgaard's deeply disturbing 4th Symphony, "Leaf Fall" 1916, to be in good company here. Haitink's take on things generally differs just a bit from the English conductors, but I think "In the Fen Country" in particular justifies buying the set. ... Read More:

Well it's been a long long time for this to see the light of day but it has to go down as the best music DVD ever produced. The Led Zeppelin legend is captured here in all it's glory with superb sound and images. Starting with black and white tv shows from 1969 all the way up to a stunning huge open air Knebworth extravaganza in 1979 with everything in between. If you either saw the band live and want to re-live the experience or want to know why they are still idolised 40 years after their first get-together in Jimmy Page's River Thames houseboat then get this DVD-you will not regret it.

I saw the group live and listened to the CD, because I heard so many good things about them. The music is beautifully and and well played, but stylistically it's all over the place. It just didn't do anything for me.
