I bought my daughter (3 years 10 months)the Letterland Book and she loved it from the start, so I thought buying the CD would be a good idea. I have been playing it in the car on the way to nursery and back and she really pays attention to the words in all the songs and knows some of them now, even though she hasn't had the CD for long. She likes the CD so much, she now asks for it to be played everytime we go out in the car. As with any CD you play a few times it gets a bit boring for you as an adult if you listen to it all the time, so sometimes I just say to her I've left it at home and then play it for her again the next time. She can't get enough of it and if she's happy, I'm happy too.

I drive about an hour each day and wanted something that I could use in the car. Unlike the previous reviewer, I find the sound is absolutely fine. There is an option to have French played on one speaker and English on the other but I reckon it is best on normal stereo. I liked the CD so much, I bought the 2nd and 3rd series. These are not quite as good as the speaker hesitates before saying whether polite or familiar forms are to be used. Also, all are slightly "American" in terms of English phraseology but not too bad. It is a very good way to learn good diction and vocabulary but you really need other material, eg writing and speaking to learn properly. Berlitz definitely write the best phrasebooks,this one is more than suitable for holiday makers and language students alike. What makes this a great little book is the arrangement of different sections from accommodation, eating out, health and the food glossary. The excellent graphic presentations on each page of the book are well supplemented with pertinent and naturalistic phrases and questions. Berlitz phrasebooks stand out from most others that I have looked at, which are often just words on a page. Berlitz brings the language to life and the excellent arrangement of the book makes it easy to find necessary information very quickly. I recommend this book to people who want to get by in Spanish on their holidays.

With a holiday to Italy coming up, preceded by several long car journeys, I bought three language CDs to listen to in the car: Earworms, Learn in Your Car Complete Language Course and BBC Quickstart and I'd rate them them in that order, Earworms being easily the best and getting 5 stars. I found all of them easy to use in the car, although in the end I felt they were better suited to short journeys rather than doing a lot in one go. Unlike the other two, which are aimed at the holiday goer, Learn in Your Car is a complete language course, just as it says on the cover, and is good value for money. The recordings are made with English in one channel (right) and Spanish in the other (left). Every English word or phrase is then repeated in Spanish from the other speaker (twice, with a pause between each for you to repeat it). So either the reviewer had their balance knob turned just to the one channel, or they had a dodgy cassette machine. My CD version works fine and it seems a very effective way of learning. I would still suggest listening the first few times with the booklet in front of you (not in your car!) so that you can visualise the spelling of the words you are trying to say, but thereafter you can make valuable use of that lost time sitting in traffic jams by practicing your Spanish vocabulary and pronunciation.

Having paid £29.99 for this course on the basis of the favourable reviews on Amazon, never have I been so disappointed. The first disc was little more than an endless stream of vocabulary, with very little chance, guidance or practice on how to structure a sentence of day-to-day use. No special method of teaching is evident, nor is ones memory helped by such a high emphasis on vocabulary. As for the selection of vocabulary offered in the first disc, much of it is irrelevant for day to day conversation; it is as though the author decided to list everything that could be seen on an international journey, on every form of transport, from a point of departure until arriving in a German hotel. I really enjoyed this set. The tape presentation was clear, giving opportunity to hear and practice pronunciation. The booklet was a handy reference and explained some of the basics. This is a useful set for either just dabbling in German...or used as "extra practice" in conjunction with a beginner's book such as "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning German." It's a nice way to ease into German before spending mega-bucks for an in-depth course. Great as a refresher, or for drill and practice while driving, exercising or working around the house.

One of the most difficult aspects in learning any foreign language is developing listening and response skills. This course so far has enabled words, phrases and native dialect to sink in somehow without drills and repetition. I haven't tried to figure out the logic of this course, but there seems to be an effective progression of word acquisition which I find both curious and pleasing. Without any rigorous effort - I have found myself repeating and pre-empting the course vocabulary - in much the same way one remembers the words to a song on the radio?! My only criticism of this course is a very obvious one. I believe that the Cyrillic alphabet and Slavonic grammar probably don't lend themselves easily to such intuitive learning to native English ... Read More:
