What a little gem this is. I can't believe this passed me by (well it was on the radio so that's probably why). This is probably better than anything I have seen on TV for the last couple of years. I must admit that I haven't seen the HBO TV series and I'm not sure if I really want to because this is so good that I don't want to be disappointed. For those of you who don't know, Flight of the Conchords are a real band, they even have an album out on the sub pop label. Though this radio series is a fictitious account of their attempt to break into the UK scene. Another reviewer of this product complained that the interview section with Charles Richardson isn't very funny - a reaction I simply can't understand, as these twelve interviews are simply the funniest exchanges I have ever heard. Gerard Hoffnung was just 35 when he died, but he sounds like a portly (and utterly mad) sixty-year-old, and his timing and instinct for the absurd are just exquisite. A special mention to Charles Richardson, a totally straight American reporter, assigned to extract a meaningful interviews from this eminent musician and cartoonist but finding each attempt he makes to start a conversation quickly unravelling and thus being driven ever so gently to utter exasperation. Whilst I admire Chris Rea's ambition I fear the scope was too great and he stretched himself too far. From 11 CDs I found only 11 songs of top notch material. The majority of the rest was rather generic needing further effort applied or simply forgotten all together. Therefore it's quite a hefty sum to pay out when the majority of it is so unrewarding. Instead I'd recommend people save their money for the Blue Jukebox album which is a far more focused and rewarding experience.

Great intro to classical music, aimed at kids, but not overly child like to drive an adult listening alone to cringe. Lots of inserts of brief bits of music, most of which I had heard before, even though I am a classical music novice. I got into this item from listening to Famous Composers, and More Famous composers by Naxos. There is some overlap in the stories, but this item gives a far broader and deeper overview. The version I got was read by the American Marin Alsop. Thoroughly enjoyable.

If you are looking for an all-round compilation of Hungarian music, this isn't it. This compilation focuses exclusively on traditional music, which is fine by me (that's what I bought it for) but you must look elsewhere to find contemporary Hungarian music. Like traditional folk music everywhere, the music here is fairly simple but effective, with limited instrumentation, being originally intended for local events such as dances and weddings, or simply for passing the time. Shepherds' songs form an important part of traditional folk music. Overall, there is a fine mix of ballads and up-tempo songs.
