I first heard of Bob Marley when watching I Am Legend at the cinema, and liked what I heard so I looked him up on Amazon and liked the preview tracks, and all the 16 (at the time) 5 star ratings said it all! So I bought it and when I first played it I didn@t like it, can you believe that, but when I played it a second time and each time (I can't stop playing it now!) I get bowled over - if you are a new comer like me - give it a chance - it's brilliant! Well worth the money!

If you put Blondie, dub reggae, punk, new wave, disco, dancehall, electro, pop and ska in a blender and pressed the button, you'd come out with something approaching Santogold's debut. If that sounds horribly arty and pretentious, though, don't fear; this is also a brilliant pop album, topped off with buckets of Brooklyn cool courtesy of Santi's Ronettes-meets-Debbie Harry voice. There's great hooks aplenty and you'll be humming these songs all summer. Yeah, okay, it's so undoubtedly trendy I expect to hear it the next time I go in Topshop, but Santogold is so much more than your average NME-endorsed chancer and far far more than (as some have claimed) a weaker version of her pal M.I.A.- and if you don't know who that is, you ought to search for 'Kala' and ... the other fellow seems to have missed the point. it should be the music that's being reviewed and not the product. so then... if you know and love the songs of eddy grant, remember the hits and want to reconnect and hear more, or indeed, like your reggae light, poppy and singalong hook friendly, you wont be disappointed. buy with confidence.

This is a brilliant introduction for anyone who thinks Jamaican music begins and ends with Bob Marley. From the ska of Desmond Dekker ("Shanty Town") and The Maytals ("Pressure Drop" - later covered with less success by The Clash) to the more soulful efforts of the magnificent Jimmy Cliff (his three most classic tunes are included here, two of them twice for some reason), there isn't a dud track on offer. Possibly the finest reggae album of all time.

just received it yesterday.....its a great album...powerful lyrics....very political....nice riddims...and every singer in this band takes his chance in this album.....the only songs i don't really like are "slow down" and "i shot the sheriff" (dunno, maybe UB40 should've been done a cover of another bob marley song...from lee perry period...like "stand alone" or "duppy conqueror").....

The booklet that comes with this CD is now my favourite book of poetry. Vinnie's always been my favourite lyricist, but he's just surpassed himself. I think Less Than Jake should always release albums with some kind of concept (their best CD is Hello Rockview you see, whatever anyone says). When Vinnie's focused on a subject (in this CD Gainsville for the most part) and he's writing about something meaningful to him, something incredible just happens. Many themes run throughout the album, mostly focusing on city life, there's drugs and religion, but many are much closer to Vinnie, just look at Abandon Ship,Handshake... hell the entire middle of the album. And it all climaxes in the final three songs which merge together as a few of the songs on this release do, which ... Read More:

I don't really understand why Eddy Grant has somehow disappeared out of the main public's view, especially not after hearing this Greatest hits compilation (HMV doesn't even have it in their catalogue). Tracks such as "I don't wanna dance" and "Gimme hope Joanna" have a peculiar lasting effect on me. Eddy Grant's got a talent for capturing the essence of human life, and it really rocks.

Saw the man himself at Glastonbury Festival 2003 and he brought the sunshine out and Jamaica to the people what a show. This CD is a fantastic collection of all his hits and you wont go wrong by listening to this on a hot summers day - you will have a smile on your face. This is about as uplifting as music can get.
