I haven't heard the whole album but I just want to say that Live with Me with Terry Callier is the sexiest record EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It even beats Night Nurse by Gregory Issacs and that's saying something!

I've heard this record for the first time today,(been on another planet!) and the first thing that struck me about it was how the vocal is so similar to my favourite female singer, the little known (in this country}, HEATHER NOVA. I'm not a fan of much electronic music, and I was particularly irritated by the 'vinyl scratching' that appears in several of the songs, however mainly because of the vocal and the songs that don't involve the scratch I know i'm going to really like this album. If you dont know HEATHER NOVA, do me (and yourself)a favour and go have a listen. If you love Beth Gibbons vocal with 'trip hop' music, you will be blown away by HEATHER NOVA with a live band. I suggest 'oyster' as the first album to try, or 'storm' if you prefer ... Read More:

I bought this album because it had "Teardrop" and "Angel" on it,but I took the opportunity to sit in a completely dark room and properly listen to this...and couldn't stop listening to it the day after as well! It's calming, dark and beautifully written, especially songs like "Risingson", "Teardrop" and "Black Milk" (my new favourite!)
Buy this album, prepare to fall in love.

harrowing, infectual and experimental sounds make this a far superior offering to the pedestrian dummy.thats no too say dummy is lazy or derivative it has some great tracks and a consistant theme but i think it never really climaxed like this self titled lp. cringeworthy certainly not gorgeous and expressive absolutely rarely groups have the integrety to produce music that attempts something new and in doing so pushes the boundaries for a greater experience in their second helping i strongly reccomend this for anyone who is ready to emerce themselves in the greatness this sublime album has to offer

raf!!

In reference to the review dubbing this a one track album, what album were you listening to???? I am offended by your review!

Yes unfinished sympathy is a truly great song, but is by no means the best on the album! Blue lines is one of the greatest albums ever and every track is a classic!

I first got into electronic music a while ago, and frankly couldnt have asked for a better induction. I was recomended this by a friend when I said I liked the electronic stuff on Kid A and he told me that most of it was influenced by this man.
He was right, Shadow is a genius. His skill with a drum machine is matched only by his skill with a sampler and his talent for mixing, perfectly capturing an ever shifting mood with changes of tempo, time signature, key, instruments and genre. Its all captured here, like a beautifully preserved insect in a peice of amber. Jazz, soul, blues, and that ever present loaded-gun backbeat, tying every interesting sample and gorgeous melody together into an amazingly cohesive journey of beats.
It is, like the best albums, ... Read More:

As with all who have felt compelled to add their thoughts on this amazing double CD, I too find it timeless and one of those rare collections you will never get tired of.

We often drive upto Wales (usually leave around 8pm and get to mid Ceredigian around midnight) and this collection, specially Part 1, is reserved for the last hour or so....nothing like rolling through the night to this sound :)

Hope everyone gets to experience these sounds....thanks to the Bear for recommending it :)

I remember well the period of the early nineties - and the sounds that were in my life then. Much of my leisure time was spent clubbing: fast-paced, loud, excitable and generally full-on. It was a good time and the music I heard when I was out was fantastic. But I often felt some "humanity" was missing. During those 'down times' I'd drop Protection onto my record player and slide back into a feeling of warmth, honesty and embracing lyrics. "Lyrics!" I thought, that's what's was missing! What was the point otherwise? It was simply music only of the 'thrill factor'. Of course I listened to other classics that my collection contained, but this was the sound at the time. And Massive Attack had seemed to tap into the zeitgeist.

There was a brooding sense of darkness ... Read More:

I was a bit dismayed to read some of the reviews pushing this as great jazz, mainly because I have a large collection of jazz (both old and new) and this is probably the least likely thing I've got that falls into that genre. It feels overly repetitive, with the occasional high point - but they are too few to make it anything more than OK. It breaks no new ground, sounds quite derivative, but three stars for the quality of recording & it is well put together. But if you consider this to be great jazz you need to listen to more and cast your net wider.

Yeah, this is good. I don't think there's a weak track on this album. As always, Tricky sounds almost asleep when he's actually part of the track - often you get other folk singing... with a bit of Tricky whispering in the background... or growling... or sounding like he's challenging the world record for speaking while holding gravel in his mouth. Smart stuff.

Is it deep? I dunno... I like it is all I'm saying... there might be a 'message' or two in the tracks - hell, it might be full of 'messages', but I just really like 'em. It chills me out to listen to this, all the songs sound pretty unrushed, like there's all the time in the world - except maybe for Black Steel and Brand New You're Retro of course.

Lyrically this album is clever and it rhymes a lot... ... Read More:
