Right. Lets get a couple of things straight. I do NOT have a beard. I do NOT attend beer festivals with my own wooden tankard clipped onto my vintage Harley-Davidson belt. I have NEVER worn socks with sandles while listening to someone sing hey-nonny-nonny with a finger wedged firmly in their ear. I do NOT like folk music. Until now. After Seth was nominated for the Mercury prize for Kitty Jay, I and plenty of others went out and bought it. Quite liked it. Then Freedom Fields came along where Seth rocked up the traditional folk sounds with some great rythym led songs. Many beards spluttered their warm brown "Badgers Stomach Rumbler" all over their sandled feet. Then along came PMH. I was expecting to be disappointed, as surely he couldn't keep ... Read More:

Not a regular visitor to this genre, but this CD seems to lurch around between eighties All About Eve-style, to American country, to a vaguely mariachi style track sung with a Scots accent. It's all nice enough, and with a price tag to please, but it's not my understanding of earthy folk music.

Yep, Enjoyed her first offering, which was/is more refreshing.
Like a few hear I agree, she's grown-up, not good. And she got married, whats she like!
I've only played it twice, 3 might be pushing it, sorry.
Hey, When she gets divorced we might get a good 3rd album, with swearing and stuff!! fingers crossed!

Having thoroughly enjoyed her more traditional previous album Rough Music, and following the recent Channel 5 documentary on Eliza, I had expected something in a similar vein. However, this is very different. It follows in the trail of her previous self-written album (the underrated Angels & Cigarettes) and infuses her folk leanings with an unexpected variety of instruments and styles. What comes through on every song is the strength of the song writing, the vividly drawn characters and the wonderful narratives. All delivered in Eliza's beautiful and expressive singing style. It's an album that rewards repeated listens and leaves you feeling uplifted on every occasion. Incidentally, if you ever get the chance to see Eliza live, don't miss out ... Read More:

Sadly someone obviously suggested to Robert Plant that this would be a good idea....recording a (mostly) countryesque album with Alison Krauss. They were wrong!! I have no problem with Plant (or anyone else for that matter) trying new things, but please..... this was a bad idea that should have stayed just that.... an idea!! Why on earth so many people feel the need to heap praise on this album is beyond me - it has no redeming qualities to my ears whatsoever - even if Robert Plant is involved.......come to think of it that old story of the Emporer's new clothes comes to mind!!

The voice is the first thing you notice. The early poetic renditions on such classics as "Suzanne", "Sisters of Mercy" and "Famous Blue Raincoat" are presented in a voice that is deadpan but not as gruff as in later years. This was at a period when he was a well kept secret and with a style and presentation that not everyone took to. Move onto disc 2 and you notice how the voice deepens and the songs become bigger. One thing that Cohen has never failed to deliver is quality songs with curious stories to tell. He has an almost hymn-like or gospel touch on a lot of his work, usually enhanced by superb backing singers and wondrous musicians and arrangements.

I move between both of his periods with equal ease, but I find the latter stuff more appealing ... Read More:

The 28 tracks on this wonderful double CD are drawn from a series of 23 Ethiopiques albums put together by the inspirational French promoter Francis Falceto. This haunting, uplifting music which is an intriguing mixture of jazz, soul, funk & folk was created and recorded in Ethiopia during the final years of Emperor Haile Selassie's reign(1930-74).
'The Very Best of Ethiopiques' has been described as "doing for Ethiopia what the Buena Vista Social Club did for Cuba" and this marvellous music certainly deserves to reach the widest possible audience.

I'm not from the US, my family hail from Kashmir and I was born in the UK, grew up listening to punk rock but WOW! The soundtrack literally drips with the era and place it hails from; every time I hear a snippet I swear I can feel the heat and smell the wheat - so amazing!

To put it simply this is one of the best folk albums I have ever purchased, the choice of tracks is inspired, and I have found myself listening to it over and over again.

It is simply superb, and worth every single penny!

My favourite tracks are John Barleycorn and the charming ouses ouses ouses!
