This is as fine an introduction to the works of Leonard Cohen as could be imagined. The track list, selected by the man himself, covers almost every period of his recorded output (Cohen is not prolific in the way, say, Bob Dylan is, or Neil Young), but I do feel some truly great stuff has been overlooked, i.e. the hushed, but haunting version of 'Story Of Isaac' from 1973's LIVE SONGS, which is one of the most profound things that anyone has ever written, the great live recordings from FIELD COMMANDER COHEN: Tour Of 1979, which admittedly was not released until after THE ESSENTIAL LEONARD COHEN appeared. Of those songs, I feel the title track is as good and epic a song as any he's recorded, and the version from NEW SKIN FOR THE OLD CEREMONY ... Read More:

Spotted in a bookshop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. There wasn't a "2" was there? So I bought it. And it's hardly been off in the car since. I agree with other reviewers that not every song here is a gem, but the Lucas numbers do have something that stirs the sentiments. (You who said he wasn't a great songwriter, I present exhibit A - "Bring 'em Down" on Fairport 9). It's true though that it's the Denny tracks that really stir the soul. Her remarkable ability to interpret a song never disappoints on this disc.

With all the emotion in the vocals, and all the Telecaster Pyrotechnics of the genius Donahue, it's easy to ignore the superb foundation on which this edifice is built. British folk-rock music has provided some of the best rhythm sections ... Read More:

This is one of those classic albums that everyone has to own, and it is a very special record.

There are so many brilliant songs on this album; personal favourites are Out On The Weekend, Heart Of Gold and Old Man, but every track is just as brilliant as the previous and next.

The overall feel is just mellow and relaxed in terms of musical arrangement and vocal delivery, but the lyrics are intense in their depths of heartfelt emotion.

It sounds too simple to be this good, with very modest and unassuming instruments and a harmonica, which adds to the feel of the heart of the American countryside/prairies.

This album may be 36 years old but it still sounds so fresh and is still relevant now.

This album was on constant play throughout an American road-trip of mine in a camper van from festival to festival, state to state, gradually heading westward to California. I was 18 at the time and the year was 1989. The start of the journey began at the Woodstock festival, twenty years on, (opened with a speech from Jimi Hendrix's father and a set by Richie Havens). As a consequence it is drenched in memories.

This album has it all. Steeped in the golden glow of the times, it covers many areas of being, heartache, visions, psychedelic thoughts, glimpses of pastoral idylls, all set within a hybrid of folk/country/rock that is distinctively Neil's own. His thin nasally voice is perfect throughout, the harmonies sublime, the quality of recording simultaneously ... Read More:

No, surely not. But yes, Van Morrison is 'reviving' Astral Weeks on stage. He really shouldn't bother.

This album is full of unlistenable blathering. Morrison tries so hard to be 'Poetic' and to sing with 'abandonment'. The result is a dog's dinner.

I'd read about the album's 'Classic' status, and felt I'd been really duped. I won't be a ripped-off concert-goer. Not for this. Next...

I listen to an expansive range of musical styles and ages, from "The Classics" right through to Metal. Now I'm not calling myself an expert in the field by any means, but you can usually get a gut feeling pretty quickly about the effort, imagination and skill put into any work - and this album, from the first listen - give you audio pleasure at every turn. It just oozes skillfull musicianship and beautifully crafted harmonies. The type of work that will always be considered a classic and will always be replayed by the listener over and over again. As for the opinions about Young's involvement etc - it really doesn't matter - CSN were already fantastic - adding in Y was simply a case of adding an extra ingredient of a similar style - and for me - on this album - his presence is only just ... I've just been listening to my (previous release) copy of this album and it's excellent!. It gave me the opportunity to compare House Carpenter with Joan Baez (and Sweeney's Men) and it stands up magnificently. You have 6 days left to download their performance on Later via BBC iPlayer!

In the beginning the way into Dylan was via Peter Paul & Mary, the Turtles, the Byrds and Johnny Cash.
And commercially electric Dylan was just right.
This CD is just a sampler and introduction to the Art of Dylan. If you want more you get the original albums on CD.All but one have been on catalog since CDs began.
My favorite Dylan song is Can you please crawl out your window.
Thus this double CD would only be of interest if there was a booklet with it and its by no means the only one of its kind as the most recent-titled DYLAN and in 3 different editions -comes with a picture book.
Today's Dylan collector needs plenty of money and plenty of room
