Spotted in a bookshop in Bakewell, Derbyshire. There wasn't a "2" was there? So I bought it. And it's hardly been off in the car since. I agree with other reviewers that not every song here is a gem, but the Lucas numbers do have something that stirs the sentiments. (You who said he wasn't a great songwriter, I present exhibit A - "Bring 'em Down" on Fairport 9). It's true though that it's the Denny tracks that really stir the soul. Her remarkable ability to interpret a song never disappoints on this disc.

With all the emotion in the vocals, and all the Telecaster Pyrotechnics of the genius Donahue, it's easy to ignore the superb foundation on which this edifice is built. British folk-rock music has provided some of the best rhythm ... Read More:

The excellent CD booklet that comes with this CD informs us that the name Matachin is enigmatic and of uncertain origin .Originally thought to be Arabic and derived from the word mutawajjihin meaning "mask-wearer" though now it is considered to derive from the Italian mattaccino the diminutive of the meaning matto -mad or fool. This is more apt for this 11 piece band have a certain barmy frisson . There is also a hypothesis that the name comes from an old Spanish sword dance ! This album could make you dance though I suspect it will make your head spin and your knees pop out of their sockets if you do .
Bellowhead are for the uninitiated, which until listening to Matachin I was, like a burlesque collision between a folk band and a big band . The ... Read More:

Dengue Fever are a group of eclectic LA hipsters fronted by a bona fide Cambodian pop star (Chhom Nimol), who make a heady brew informed by retro spy-movie soundtracks, psychedelia, lounge jazz and rock and roll. Apparently influenced by organist Ethan Holtzman's trips to Cambodia in 1997 when a unique local 60s-era rock was still prevalent, the band's sound is fleshed out with wide ranging influences from Ethiopian jazz, surf, and garage rock. Nimol's sings mostly in Khmer, giving it distinct Eastern melodies, while the sonic landscape is a mish-mash of retro stylings that would make it ideal for a Quentin Tarrantino or Jim Jarmusch soundtrack. In fact, if you like this you would do well to pick up the latter's Broken Flowers OST, which features the likeminded ... Read More:

That cover pic: the radiance in those eyes, and that smile! Wow, Joan: so glad to have you back, dear friend.
The flowers on the cd, the warm heart of a kindred spirit, that never-aging how-could-one-forget soprano. The deep humanity and universality, too.
By the time the first spin of this cd was through, a 6 or 7 lyric file had been compiled.

Here, amidst all the useless political squabble over our handkerchief-sized Belgium, we've never ceased to find truth in your words ever since the sixties, driving 'the Old Dixie down', strumming along to your Dylan tunes or 'putting the load right on me myself and I'.
An ode to that fragile planet and that precious inner peace that our kind has been craving for for so long, a wistful homecoming, ... Read More:

Just when I thought a nostalgic Christmas was over I came across this super 2 CD set from NotNow. The set boasts 50 songs and a whole host of well known stars too. It is good to have a mix of both American and British stars represented and there are even duets.
This is a welcome addition to the Christmas titles offering something just a little different and with Eartha Kitt, David Whitfield, Dickie Valentine, Bing, Dick, Frank, Perry, Nat, Ella, Peggy and Judy to serenade you whilst you cook that traditional roast turkey what more could you ask for?
Favourite songs for me are "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"; "Silver Bells"; "Santa Claus got Stuck in My Chimney" and the traditional carols.
Good sound throughout and attractive packaging make this a great ... Read More:

Eliza is a huge talent- writing , playing and a voice like no other, but for me this CD seems to have lost the sound and emotion and subtlety that I love about much of her work.
Big sound, but unsatisfying , maybe less is more?

I've been listening to the album for a couple of days now and it just gets better everytime. I love stripped down well recorded work like this and I knew I would not be disappointed knowing Lofgren (Hi NILS!) was doing this. Great musician and wonderful work all round. Neil's old Martin as well as the heirloom piano fit beautifully!
Love ya Nils, Love ya Neil and 'Long May You Boys Run'...

As a fan of Kris Drever's "Black Water", I was a little disappointed to find that this album comes across more as a follow up to Roddy Woomble's solo work. Drever and McCusker are very much in the background, and for me the result is that Woomble's tendencies towards overwrought lyrics and under-developed melodies comes to dominate proceedings.

There are some bright spots, but to me it seems like a missed opportunity for a more balanced collaboration.
