I have to say that this box set was a joy to behold. Not only was the re-mastered music absolutely fantastic, but also the added visuals were a delight. It does beg the question, where have they been hiding these films all these years? OK, so one or two of them are looking a little bit flaky with age, but isn't that the effect ageing has? How does the DVD of the early seventies 'Yessongs' look in 2008, after all? And where else will you see such fanastic material anyway? Moreover, what these sounds and visuals show to me is that in losing Gabriel and Hackett (the latter has been criminally underated for decades in this listener's view) the band lost not merely two members, but a third of their very creativity, and were never the ... I bought the special edition with the book, DVD, CDs with outtakes, auditions, missing pieces etc. But I also wanted to hear The War Of The Worlds in ultra high quality SACD. Well, I feel let down. The quiet parts get cut, e.g. echoes pop in and out. It seems the recording engineer has cut all sound below a certain level from the mix tapes. Going back to my original CD version, there is certainly more noise but there is also a hell of lot more depth to the sound. Playing them side by side, I hear a complete change in the mixes right the way through. I noticed that the vocals of the SACD are muted by comparison to the CD version. There's very little that I can add to the heaps of praise that this SACD has attracted. I received my brand new sealed copy today from an Amazon Marketplace vendor in New York for a little over £6 (what a bargain!) and by the time I reached track 4 I was so excited I had to tell someone about it. Unfortunately nobody at home has the same rabid level of interest in music and things technical that I have so I have logged on to direct my enthusiasm to Amazon customers instead. The SACD audio quality is spectacular for a start. The noise is absolutely zero on this release so the initial heartbeat sound really did creep up on me. This could have been a lot better,the remastering is not that good and I must agree it is a bit of a one track album.

yes it didn't win a Gramophone award but surely it's a fantastic recording. crystal clear, well directed by Sir Charles Mackerras. Listening to them is pure joy. Dont know where to start? this is the recording that you can start with absolutely! 5 star!

This is a better CD than ECM's Alina, as it covers the same ground - i.e. Arvo's tintinnabuli chamber work - but offers a slightly fuller repertoire. In other words, unlike the ECM, this CD offers three different Spiegels (all largely similiar, it has to be admitted, but beautiful nonetheless, and does include all three versions - for violin, viola and cello, where the ECM only offered violin and cello); Alina in its original version (this is where the ECM disc is at it's best and most annoying in only offering great improvisations on this simplest and most beautiful of Arvo's early tintinnabuli works, but neglecting to include the original version); and the wonderful Variations for Arinuschka. This is a SACD disk but like all Linn records will play on a standard CD player. As a bonus the standard CD version on this SACD disk is HDCD encoded for those that can use it. In spite of a spread of old standards the album seems fresh from start to finish with not a foot put wrong. It never seems contrived, just good singing, backing and quality about every aspect. I do not normally review albums as so much is personal taste and what comes over well in your own space yet this album has never failed to please either in the car or on a full blown audio system therefore I can only hope you enjoy this album as much as the artists and production team intend.

this is my favourite set of the beethoven symphonies..the sound is superb, and the playing has plenty of energy and feeling - quite a fast pace to other versions though
