Look no further than this for an excellent set of Mendelssohn Symphonies and Overtures, superbly recorded and peformed. Always rather underestimated, in my opinion, compared to Beethoven and Schubert. Shame though, that the text for the "Hymn of Praise" (Symphony Nr 2)is not included in the notes..

The transition of music from live performance onto disc is not an easy one and only a handful of recordings achieve it - but this is one of them

Finding Wagner was one of the greatest discovery in my life. But I found that Wagner's compositions could be enjoyed maximally if they were performed by Berlin, Vienna, Bayreuth, or Concertgebouw. I collect Wagner's CDs btw, coz I'm crazy about it. This CD is a perfect choice for those who love Wagner, or love music with feelings.

All too often Gershwin is recorded as a safe seller for people who don't really like Classical Music, or people who want Easy Listening Music by a Real Composer. The usual result is lazy pigeonholing by pleasant but lightweight jazzing up (frequently with Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris) or the addition of an impressive but inapproppriate late romantic weight and sheen (a frequent failing with the piano concerto).

Virgin did a real service to this composer when they gave Wayne Marshall total control of these performaces as Soloist and Conductor. He lets Gershwin's interplay of classical and jazz elements speak for itself without forcing a marriage or accentuating the jazz element. Instead he revels in the wonderful instrumental ... Nikolaus Harnoncourt's Brahmsian archaeological excursion into classical music is a mixed blessing, but one where its virtues outweigh its flaws. I commend Grammophone's Guide to Classical CDs for rating Harnoncourt's Brahms symphony cycle as definitive. Here he has gone back to Brahms' original scores, offering invigoratingly fresh perspectives on Brahms' symphonies. Furthermore, he's emphasized 19th Century performance practices that have gone out of fashion, such as playing multiple notes with the single stroke of a string musician's bow. For example, Harnoncourt's reading of Brahms' 2nd Symphony is the most introspective I've heard, without the lush, warm sounds of the string, woodwind, and horn sections that I've come to expect after hearing mesmerizing, ... This is an astonishing reading of 1812 Overture. Vibrant, dynamic and passionate...everyone's enjoying themselves. It builds up to a magnificent climax and is performed with real gusto, but you will require an above average system to really appreciate the performance dynamics. In my room it ranges 35-110db and the concluding artillery salvo is quite something!!
When the mood takes you..................!!

This is an expensive set but it's worth every penny. Abbado's interpretations are amazing. Couple that with the fact that this set also includes all the overtures and similar one off orchestral masterpieces, you really can't go wrong with this generous set, especially if you want to have Brahms' best orchestral works in one tidy collection and go back to them time and time again.

The Brahms syphonies are all masterpieces, but they don't always come off well on CD: they are more difficult to get right than more superficially flashy music. Klemperer, similarly, made lots of recordings, but not all of them are universally acclaimed. However here, everything is just right. The music is treated with the respect and attention to detail you would expect, but there's also sparkle. Klemperer makes the repeats and separates the violins, and he also, remarkably, keeps the basic pulse of the movements rock-steady, and yet gives the impression of allowing the flow to alter when needed. These are performances that anyone will enjoy, and which will give more pleasure the more you listen to them.
