I really enjoyed this CD and I did find the music relaxing. However as someone who meditates regularly I do not think that it is music that would be used to meditate to. One can sit and relax to this CD but if you want to meditate this CD, in places, can be quite stirring and would not lend itself to an actual meditation practice.

I am not musically literate, i.e i dont know a crotchet from a quaver but i know what i like, is it an exagerration to say that if we had to show one example of the greatness and potential of human culture, to say some visiting aliens, would it be reasonable to play them these recordings?

this is my favourite set of the beethoven symphonies..the sound is superb, and the playing has plenty of energy and feeling - quite a fast pace to other versions though

I have given some time to this box set and found the orchestral playing to be foursquare and the conducting not particularly inspired. How on earth anyone can pretend to compare these to Rattle's wonderful (more expensive) VPO set is beyond me. The sound is pretty good in Liverpool and Manchester studios/concert halls. Like Mackerras' Haydn on Telarc, this does nothing to me, despite its popularity. His Mozart symphonies on Telarc, and Handel etc are wonderful, but this Beethoven is dull and obvious, to my ears. Sorry. Instead I recommend the following for the budget concious: Hogwood (nice budget slimline reissue set) - sensible affectionate performances, about the best of authentic, esp for the price ... Putting a title like `Worlds Greatest' on the front of a CD is obviously a bold claim, and one which many people have become so familiar with that they tend to take it with a pinch of salt. There are so many ways of trying to catch the buyers interest that very few titles like these really jump out at the buyer. This one did jump out at me, though not so much for the choice of tracks, more for the quality of artists who perform them. Considering this is only a 2CD set, far too short for any Mozart compilation, the list of performers reads like a roll call for the best `Last Night of the Proms' ever staged. I recently purchased this box set, knowing that Karajan is one of the all time greats. The performance its self is very good, however on my high quality audio equipment I was diappointed by the sound quality of the recording. There is a constant noise of static in the background of every single recording... it is very off putting during the quiet sequences eg. opening of the 9th. I do not know what to do now, should I put up with it or seek another recording? Disappointed.

Fashions come and go. From the latter years of the 20 Century the attempt to "recover" what Beethoven might have expected to hear through the use of copies of instruments in use at the time of composition and attention to (Czerny's?) metronome markings in the symphonic scores has has given us a current performing tradition of "lean and fast" Beethoven. This tradition is wonderfully well served on Sir Roger Norrington's complete set of the symphonies with the SWD Rundfunksorchest available on Hanssler (NOT the London Classical Players' set so temptingly cheap on Virgin!)and this would be my desert island set (it is easily available from Amazon though costs just over twice as much as the Klemperer discs. This is a great introduction to Mozart and some nice musical masterpieces that will just help you unwind! However, this CD will not do any better or worse job than anything by Mozart - and I would recommend a collection compiled by Teresa Berganza, Sony. It is affordable and quite extensive.

Being a pianist I have played much of Beethoven's work before but only recently stumbled across this gorgeous symphony. More commonly known as the 'Pastoral' symphony, many people may recognise it from Disney's 'Fantasia' as it was used towards the end (the bit with all the unicorns and people as half person, half horse!)It is a gorgous piece of music though and I would highly recommend it to anyone even if you don't usually listen to classical music. It's perfect for revision as well as it's so relaxing! Buy it and love it!!!
