Simply a marvellous performance and recording of Tchaikovsky's (slightly neglected) Manfred Symphony. The R.L.P.O play marvellously, with particularly characterful woodwinds, and Petrenko delivers a performance that has all the excitement of a live performance. The great melody in the strings in the final movement is delivered with a terrific sweep; this is a truly committed performance, and is very well recorded (much better than most record companies get in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall). At this price it's an absolute bargain. Tchaikovsky lovers don't hesitate!

Rattle's Mahler is really for people with open minds: people who don't hold on to Karajan and Barbirolli like comfort blankets! It's a great set, with the awarding winning second head and shoulders above anything else on the market (and yes, I've heard them all). The eighth (I was actually at the concert) is as perfect as you will hear anywhere too. And remember, several of these, including 1, 5, 7 & 8 are live recordings, really getting across the excitement and musicality not only of great events, but great Mahler.

A splendid bargain in every way. This recording is, as the series suggests "A Legendary Recording from the Deutsche Gramophon Catalogue." Kubelik brings a sense of mystery, and a cheery air to Dvorak. I have heard the Karajan recording from 1965, and although it is good, this recording does win with flying colours. In 8, Kubelik does not hesitate to slow down, indeed some bits are daringly slow, especially the third movement, but he then compensates by whipping things back up into a vigorous tempo in the finale. Watch out for some bouncy rhythms in the first movement, exciting fanfares, and bouncy timpani playing in the second movement. I only really came to appreciate Sibelius in the last couple of years, travelling through time from Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms; I'm glad to have taken the trouble. Although I find something a little sterile about some aspects of the performances of some parts of this bargain box, I guess that Sir Colin Davis is allowed to relax a little on this umpteenth traversal of Sibelius's orchestral music. The RCA sound quality is just fine and I agree with the other reviewers that this set would make a great choice for Sibelius beginners; it certainly proved to be so for me!

Look no further than this for an excellent set of Mendelssohn Symphonies and Overtures, superbly recorded and peformed. Always rather underestimated, in my opinion, compared to Beethoven and Schubert. Shame though, that the text for the "Hymn of Praise" (Symphony Nr 2)is not included in the notes..

Karajan recorded the four Brahms symphonies three times for DG and for me the earliest (1963 or thereabouts) is the best by a fair margin, and although not perfect, the sound quality is better - more natural and open. There's more life, spontanaity and drama in the 60s cycle, which by comparison his later efforts sound somewhat mannered. Like much of Karajan's output, his earlier years with the BPO give better performances. Later repeats (say 1970 onwards) are generally marred by a BPO which had been over-refined by Karajan's influence in the way it sounded - plush and too 'well-rounded' - a good anology would be a typical German big car; smooth and comfortable but ultimately bland and boring. The approach might suit Richard Strauss but not Brahms or Beethoven. ... Read More:

Using the world `Ultimate' for the title of a single CD of 1 hour and 15 minutes for this most famous of British composers is a rather bold claim. This release (from 1997) is by no means the `Ultimate' (how could it when it contains such a small fraction of Elgar's output?) and it's definitely not the best value when rated alongside others of its type, for there are plenty of good Elgar collections available, consisting of anything between 5 disc sets up to 30 disc boxes representing a large chunk of the composers works. The collection is saved from anonymity perhaps by its consistency, for most of the performances are by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, making a good quality and nicely uniform presentation ... This performance of Rachmaninov's second symphony made quite a stir when it was released on vinyl back in 1973 and although that may seem like a generation ago (because it is, sadly!), this newly (1999) re-mastered version succeeds in recapturing the excitement which its original release created. Prior to this recording, Previn and the LSO had toured with the symphony to Russia, where the unexpurgated version had not been heard for years, and it caused a sensation. Listening to this recording, it is not hard to understand why. This is unashamedly beautiful and lyrical music, played by an orchestra and conductor who had no misgivings about whether the music was fashionable or not, and given its full measure of feeling, with great drama and passion.
