I can't judge this from a musicians point of view, or from anything apart from that this music connects with some bit inside of me that I can't explain in technical language.

Sorrowful yes, you certainly feel that raw emotion from this album. It is also very peaceful and grounding - not great over-worked symphony that makes you wallow in your own depression. Very simple and beautiful.

All I can say is that this music connects with some inner part of me and that I love it. It's rather personal and you should take a listen to it before you buy it - but I'm sure you'll love it.

I had seen many of the performances in this set recommended separately so to have them all together in one set at such a low price is great.
The sound is very good and even if you only like half the music on these CDs, this is still a fantastic bargain.

Ralph Vaughn Williams music is centred in the very heart of the English character. If you can experience the presents of England in the works then you have felt your home. And known the love for its great past without regreting its loss of greatness.

I am glad this version is still available after all these years for it is a gem! Written as part of the War Trilogy ( 8th and 9th Symphonies being the others) it symbolises the struggle for survival in a besieged Leningrad. This version may not be to everyones taste for it is very loud, fast and brash. Leonard Bernstein draws every emotion possible from this music; he allows the music to flow and the emotions to surface. A wonderful performance all round. The recording is brilliant too, but make sure you don't upset the neighbours for it can get very loud particularly during the famous March, and the closing bars in the final movement. No lover of Shostakovich should be without this version.

I was introduced to the symphonies of Vaughan Williams in my teens through LPs of the complete cycle by Andre Previn and the LSO. These LPs have now been transferred to disc and have been made available again. They remain, after all these years and having listened to a number of other cycles, the best of the bunch, in my humble opinion.

Before moving to London, part of Andre Previn's background was in the theatre. As an American showman, he proved capable - and still is capable - of bringing out the drama inherent in the symphonic form, whilst at the same time producing a deeper understanding of the traits that make up each symphony.

There are two anecdotes I like about Previn's relationship to the music of RVW. I do not know if either ... Read More:

For some reason, this "budget box" of Shostakovich's symphonies gets the odd poor review, but I think its great. Although I have the Brilliant Classics Shostakovich box with the now "default" Barshai performances, I still frequently reach for this box in preference as it contains 10 CDs, not 27! No, really, the reason is that, in the main, these performances match Barshai.

Conducted by Mariss Jansons with 8 different orchestras between 1988 and 2005, there is little noticeable difference in the sumptuous EMI sound quality throughout this impressive set.

With a good booklet and a competitive price tag, this set is highly recommended.

Having lived with VW symphonies all my life, I was cynical about the idea of the "original" version being resurrected. My fears were groundless -this is glorious music, and the extra sections add to an already great work. I sense the shadow of Ravel hovering in the shadows -VW had studied with him for a short while - but the instrumentation and use of themes is wonderful. All praise to Richard Hickox, a great champion of British music if ever there was one, and to the LSO. This performance has become one of my Desert island discs.

Recorded in 1981, this is the best version of this five-star work I possess. The murmurings in the deep bass prior to the dawn seem clearer that in my other versions, so that I can hear such things as solo tremolo strings in the mix. There is a blazing sunrise, but the cellos then sound a little tinny once the ascent commences. Perhaps the sound is constrained by the 1980s technology. The hunting horns, however, sound wonderful.

Not everything is perfect. The brass leading up to the waterfall sound strangely winded and there are bum notes here and there. The view from the summit is stupendous, but again one senses some restraint in the sound. The trumpet solo is wonderfully well to the fore in the `Vision' section. The storm is scarily dramatic and the sunset rightfully ... Read More:
