This as hands down one of the most astonishing recordings I have ever heard. I bought it knowing a bit about tango, and a bit about Piazzolla, but regardless of that, this is incredible music. The music itself is gorgeous - dark, beautiful, ominous, brooding and deeply passionate. The playing is beyond compare - laser precise and yet at the same time gritty and rough. This is very much a band effort, and what a band - they swing, caress and whip up thunder.

Apparently this angered the tango purists in Argentina, as did much of Piazzollas output, and I can see why - this is modern, vital music, with clear influences from jazz, classical music and even the rush of punk. I must emphasise that you do not need to know much about ... Read More:

Music : Tango - Original Soundtrack
A fantastic CD featuring absolutely the best instrumentalists of our time playing a superb choice of music. There are no bad ones and they all can be danced to, if you know how to dance. The musicians seem to have taken on board the uniqueness of the moment provided them by the greatest "dance" film maker of our time, Carlos Saura. They truely put their hearts into it particularly Horacio Salgan who at the age 80 or above plays with the urgency, enthusiasm and energy of a world champion downhill racer. Along a whole host of glittering names, you are given the opportunity to hear maestros Nestor Marconi at the bandoneon & Obaldo Leo et all.

Music : The Tango Lesson - Film soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]
I've watched to film a couple of times and I have to say it grows on you - perhaps it just needs more thoughful watching than most films. It's definately not the sort of film hollywood makes - muchh too european and all the better for that. It also helps that Sally Potter is a dancer as well as director (and in this one of the principle actors).

Tango takes a lot of understanding - it's history, context in argentina, and the modern adoption throughout the world like no other dance.

On this CD there are a variety of interesting tracks - and as they were used for a dance orientated film, mostly danceable.

Try renting the film Tango Lesson [1997]and watching a couple of times - I think you'll find you want this CD ... Read More:

Like his famous Scarlatti Sonata recording, Pletnev excells in playing this sort of music. His very sensitive sort of brilliance and fluency reminds me of Horowitz. Totally captivating & delightful music making!

This is a fine specimen of what duo-playing can and should be. My pleasure in this record is in no small measure down to my enthusiasm for these particular works, among the most attractive and significant products of early romanticism. Chopin's cello sonata seems to me an even better work than his piano sonatas. None other than Tovey gives it high marks for construction, even forgetting for once to include his near-invariable reference to Beethoven as the benchmark in all such matters. Chopin had written for the cello in his early years, and the opus 3 introduction-and-polonaise is included here, but the sonata has a sheer self-assurance about that sounds as if he had been composing for it all his life. There is even a full-scale slow movement - not long but ... Read More:
