I adore Cecilia Bartoli's voice and her intelligence and musicality. Listening to her is almost unfailing delight.

But this is the first time - ever - that I must write of being disappointed by her performance.

I would like to begin by saying that this recording has many lovely things about it. Florez is meltingly superb - what a beautiful tone he has, and he phrases so intelligently! D'Arcangelo is stunning - it seems he's able to sing any sort of role at all. The chorus & orchestra all do a fine job.

But the recording quality itself is a little problematic. Bartoli's voice is recorded so far forward and with such a resonant "wet" sound that it seems not to be part of an opera... but rather like a ... Read More:

The tracks on this cd are excellent and well worth the money. I get worried about the packaging of this sort of disc though because it reminds me of Tesco's attempt to sell wine to the masses by renaming a mediocre chablis as 'Good with meat' or whatever. If this was called 'Fine Opera' or 'An Opera Sampler' then I'd be a lot happier but the dumb approach of 'The Only Opera Album You'll Ever Need' makes me cringe. Once again though: the music is very good and the performances are excellent on the whole.

I was most impressed by the two CD compilation.
As you may know, Maria Callas was one of the very few 'Bel Canto' Operatic singers. Her unique style comes across most clearly on this CD set. My favourite piece being the Bell Song by Lakmé, (Dové l'Indiana Bruna).

The two CD's cover her best works, from her songs in the mid 1950's right through until some of her last performances when her voice was not as techincal and strong. It does, however, display her ability to sing a wide variety of styles and of course, her vocal-range was astounding.

I cannot praise this CD set enough. You will have to buy it for yourself to understand how great she really was.

This is a beautiful album, which lives up to its title. Will be enjoyed by both opera buffs, and those of us who just like the songs we keep hearing on TV and radio. Now you can match the song to the title, to the opera. Includes many arias not usually found on opera compilations. Highly recommended.

For this work, Bellini was exploring a more declamatory style that was common at the time. Don't expect filigree vocal lines and pyrotechnics on the "Sonnambula" or "Puritani" order. Although standard forms can be recognized here, the style is remarkably plain, making this an unusual, intriguing and, to me, enjoyable piece of music.

The title role of Alaide might be better served by a darker, heavier voice than that of Patrizia Ciofi. Still there is much to enjoy in her performance. Her voice is vibrant and she colours it well to present a thoughtful, involved rendition of her part.

The background essay explains that Bellini wanted the great Rubini for the tenor role, Arturo, but Rubini was unavailable due to other ... Read More:

I am indebted to Classic FM for introducing me to this CD. The oboe is often a poor relation to the clarinet, but Nicholas Daniel and the Peterborough String Orchestra show what can be done with it. The playing is both lively and sensitive - Baroque at its best.

I'm a rock and blues fan by nature, but when I first heard Maria Callas a few years back I new there was something more to life than the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton and the Beatles. This woman has the voice of an Angel. Her voice is so strong, full of clarity, depth, soul and emotion. I defy anyone with at least a tiny piece of emotion in their soul not to be moved (possibly to tears) by this wonderful voice, the likes of which, I will probably never hear again in my lifetime.
I don't know anything about classical music or opera but I urge anyone who likes good music to go out and buy this CD and just enjoy it for what it is - absolute perfection!

I adore the violin with its singing and sonorous tones. There is much on this CD that I admire but unfortunately most of it is spoilt by the addition of the anodyne and bland sound of the accompanying harp! Why on earth Joshua Bell chose this is beyond me - OK it's a very personal thing but I think the harp sound completely ruins most of the tracks here.
