As a professional concert pianist for the last thirty years or so, it was a great relief to find that they have released everything you need on 2 CDs. Sure enough, since I bought it I have been able to discard the 1000 or so CDs that I had collected of performers like Cortot, Horowitz, Rachmaninoff and Schnabel (and I now have enough room for a pool table!). They are simply not necessary when you have these two CDs.

I heard the 4th Sonata by Yo Yo MA at the end of a movie on TV (cant remember) over the credits. It was so profound it made me look around to see what had aroused me. Is that performance from this CD? Its the only recording i can find.

Only a snob can be aghast at the mere existence of Classic FM. It may be easier to excuse people's protestations at the idea of putting classical music into any form of list (although it is a lot of fun). Who can really complain when you have, on one album, 30 of the most beautiful and inspiring peices of music ever written. As an adjunct to this is the inevitability of these mesmerising pieces becoming so tired and mundane after their inclusion on every Best Of CD, every car advert, every daily Classic FM schedule! And so the Intermezzo from Cavelleria Rusticana loses much of its beauty and becomes bland and almost self-parodying; Pachelbel's Cannon sounds as uninspired and dull as any modern dance track; and the ...
