Not too impressed with the quality of the recording... I was really hoping for something MUCH better than that. If someone could recommended a brilliant audio recording of Carmen that would be just fantastic. This one lets me down I think. The singing is "top-drawer" though.

Well I would have to disagree with the previous reviewers. Of course, it's all a matter of personal taste, but I was quite disappointed (having read the first review before I purchased) with this recording. I thought the pace a little slow -- ponderous, even -- at times, especially the "Te decet hymnus" passage. And the soloists, who look so promising on paper, failed to deliver, to my mind. The singers are supposed to serve the music, not the other way around. Having said that, Gheorghiu does hit some beautiful notes. I'm afraid that Daniela Barcellona's voice has a tinny quality, and Roberto Alagna may have been having an off day. Picky of me? Probably, but I expect more of such a line-up. Look no further than this for an excellent set of Mendelssohn Symphonies and Overtures, superbly recorded and peformed. Always rather underestimated, in my opinion, compared to Beethoven and Schubert. Shame though, that the text for the "Hymn of Praise" (Symphony Nr 2)is not included in the notes..

I bought this as a gift for my niece, since I wanted her to be educated about classical music as she was on her way to college. Ended up buying two copies as I found I loved it so much. Normally I like to pick and choose my orchestras, composers, and conductors, but this collection has jujst about everything. Also, I'd never bought some of the more "popular" items (Strauss and Grieg) as I'd heard them a million times, but now I have them and the performances are all great. This truly has a smattering of it all, and if you're not a classical music lover, it's bound to turn you on to the stuff.

I generally prefer 'period performances,' Rachel Podger's Mozart violin sonatas for instance, and so I have long been looking for a good 'gut string' version of Mozarts violin concertos. Monica Huggett's 'early music' version (Virgin Records) was lush and expansive, but rather anodyne. Who better, I thought, to put some excitement into these old warhorses than Carmignola? After two thorough listenings I must answer this question both a yes and a no. The recording is clear and the sound generally crisp and vibrant and Carmignola's playing is all that one could ask for. However, as Carmignola happily crows in the liner notes, these are very FAST, up tempo versions. It certainly differs them from their competition, but to what end? This live performance dates from 1999 and preserves for us a visit of the Berlin Phil under Abbado to London. They did not bring their own chorus with them, and the choirs taking part are the LSO Chorus and the CBSO Youth Chorus. The contralto soloist in the 4th and 5th movements is Anna Larsson, and we are also told the names of the violinist and posthorn player who are given certain prominent parts. The first disc is given over to the multi-part first movement only, with the remaining hour or so of music on the second. Division into tracks is sensibly aligned with the rehearsal-breaks in the composer's score, and there is a final track consisting of applause lasting three minutes and 20 seconds.
