This version of The Planets has replaced my recent LSO version. Why? Well, the balance between the contributing elements is the best i've heard so far: The bass is thunderous analogue and the high woodwind/strings are like crystal in equal measure. This is a superb achievement and exceptionally important for, 'large orchestra' where Dynamics become a recording engineer's delight or problem depending on how good they are. And these people are the best: Abbey road have done a fantastic job on the remastering of a late 70's classic, although there is one thing they could never tackle: Is this as Holst intended? I JUST WANT TO AGREE WITH EVERY WORD THAT MR JORDAN HAD SAID ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR RECORDING, NOT JUST OF 'THE LARK', BUT OF SERENADE TO MUSIC ALSO. IN FACT I JUST LOVE EVERYTHING ON THIS ALBUM! I BOUGHT MY VINYL COPY IN THE EARLY 70'S AND IT IS NOW SO WORN OUT THAT I DECIDED TO LOOK TO SEE IF A CD WAS AVAILABLE. WHAT JOY! NOT ONLY HAVE I BEEN ABLE TO FIND A CD OF MY TREASURED RECORDING, BUT WITH BONUS TRACKS, AND AT AN INCREDIBLY LOW PRICE. FOR ME THIS IS THE PURCHASE OF THE MONTH.

Everything you would want as in introduction to Vaughan Williams is here and it sounds fabulous. Whilst not my favourite recording of "The Lark Ascending", its still a treat and more than compensated for by the magnificent recordings of the "English Folk Suite" and "Oboe Concerto". Disc 2 is just a sheer delight from start to finish. Every track is sublime and you couldnt ask for a better selection of Vaughan Williams on 2 discs. The only comparison I can draw is the "Abba Gold" collection. Thats how good Vaughan Williams and this cd is. Just buy it and enjoy England's finest composer. It makes my day better whenever I put it on.

I first heard 'The Banks of Green Willow' as incidental music to a BCC 'Lorna Doone' in the 1960s and wrote to the BBC to find out what this achingly beautiful piece was. 'A Shropshire Lad' is even better. The poignancy is intensified when you know that Butterworth (the dedicatee of Vaughan Williams' 'London' Symphony) died in the First World War. 'Tintagel' is grand and imposing, echoing Arthurian legend and the beat of waves round the ancient castle. This collection is absolutely authoritative, conducted by the best of all conductors of English music and wonderful value at its low price. No-one who is interested should hesitate.

I have performed this piece as a member of the chorus in King's College Chapel and witnessed a superb performance at the Proms. I have also listened to this particular performance many times. This work is far less well known than "Gerontius" but for me (as for Boult) this is the greater work. I suspect that it is less performed than it should be because of the need for six first-class soloists. At every point, I find this strange and haunting work absolutely inspired. Perhaps the dramatic temperature cools towards the end of the first part, but this is necessary for the gradual building of tension through the extraordinary meditation of Judas (certainly the "hero" of this work) to the stunning apotheosis in the Transfiguration of Christ.
