No question that Ashkenazy, Argerich, & Michelangeli are geat pianists and that their Rach recordings are among the best. But two interpreters are so outstanding that their recordings are...what can one say...transcendent ?

The recordings by Rachmaninov himself are benchmarks and beyond reproach. Unfortunately he lived at a time when recording technology was primitive, although modern restoration specialists have made a wonderful job of bringing his recordings to life on the Naxos Historical label. If one cannot put up with the shortcomings of restored mechanical/electric recording technology, then the next best option is Horowitz, on whom Rachmaninov himself had conferred his blessing. But the technical quality of the Horowitz ... Read More:

Okay, first, for the uninitiated, what is Carmina Burana? It is that piece of music which they play if someone (prizefighters love it) needs a particualrly ostentatious entrance. Those in the UK who remember the Old Spice ads of the 70's and 80's featuring a surfer - that's Carmina Burana; specifically the first and last track "O Fortuna", "Fortune, you are like the moon; waxing and waning, bringing one man good forune and the next man ill luck" being an approximate translation. It is one of those pieces everybody has heard if they watch television or films at all (Oh yes, John Boorman's Excalibur uses a version). So, subtle it ain't? Wrong! - it has some of the most beaufiful, subtle, sophisticated, and charming pieces of music in it. Dulchissimo was ... Read More:

I've never written a review before, but my listening to this CD after I bought it earlier has compelled me to do so!

This recording of three truly great solists, Yo Yo Ma, André Previn and Leonard Bernstein, is simply fantastic. The amazing work of Shostakovich is given a new lease of life by these contemporary performers, who definitely breathe into it new life.

Typically, Shostakovich's cello music is attributed to Rostropovich, but I think Yo Yo Ma's interpretation of this - his edgy sound - is something to rival even him.

This is definitely a CD you'll want to play on loud - the orchestral clarity and recording quality is simply divine.

Ashkenazy together with Andre Previn conducting the LSO, give some of the most exhilarating performances of these piano concertos. The 3rd concerto is widely available recorded by several other top artists, and Ashkenazy's remains amongst the best out there. The the added bonus here is the fact that the same dedication and depth of understanding and communicating the music is applied to the other 4 less well known concerti, and to have them all in one budget double CD set makes this an absolute must have for Prokofiev fans, and fans of virtuoso piano playing! My personal favourite in this set is No.2 with its dark, brooding and sometimes shocking quality. It's a big contract when compared to the more lyrical and mercurial No.3

This album is a delicious offering from one of the most underrated guitar maestros of all time. Not only does he capture the Samba-inspired passion of Villa-Lobos music (unlike Rodrigo, Villa-Lobos was an accomplished guitarist in his own right), but interprets it in a way that commands and maintains the attention.

The concerto, one of the most accessible of all guitar concertos, was originally commissioned from Villa-Lobos by Segovia - but don't hold that against it! There are some memorable passages, not to mention the moody passion in the cadenza, all played with the kind of melliflouous dynamics that are synonymous with Bream's playing.

Whilst the Etudes are more of academic interest than musical, Bream conveys a level of interpretation that ... Read More:

Wow. As a Rachmaninov fan this is a must have. Ashkenazy is superb and this won't dissapoint. The concerti are of course fabulous and this recording is one of THE best. The various solo piano work are great, but prehaps best of all is the Sonata in B flat minor...this CD collection is a steal and you will get such enjoyment out of it.

Kyung-Wha Chung's artistry stands at the cusp of the middle and end of the 20th century. She produces a magnificent sound, plays with fantastic accuracy, and produces the modern expected perfection of tone and interpretation, yet also conveys admirable personal character in her playing. In her outstanding rendition of Sibelius, she captures that unique Sibelian magic of "Fire without warmth", the "Frozen passion", which pervades so much of his music. The Adagio di molto moves me to tears even now, and I first heard her performance when it was released on vinyl around the time I was doing my O-Level Music. I have many recordings of this piece, but Chung (and of course Heifetz) are my champions. The Tchaikovsky is simply brilliant, unbridled passion and commitment. Previn ... Read More:

The orchestral playing on this disc is top-notch, but it is unfortunately let down by bland and uninspiring pianism.

It's not that Previn's playing is too subtle for my tastes; he is just poor: neither imaginative nor passionate, yet not sensitive and controlled either, and with a less-than-perfect technique (not that that is necessarily a criticism per se).
