2.Rimsky-Korsakov: The Maid of Pskov from: Philips

Music : Rimsky-Korsakov: The Maid of Pskov
This was Rimsky-Korsakov's first opera and it shares certain characteristics with Boris Godunov - unsurprisingly as the two men shared a house and wrote upon the same piano at the time! Both are about troubled Tsars, both have big crowd scenes and tolling bells, both are fine works. If Boris is the greater, Pskovityanka should not be overlooked. It's a little more conventional than Boris in it's structure, but full of beautiful music and genuinely moving in the final scene.

The tale is of the Olga, the titular heroine, and her love for a rebel, who tries to raise an army against the Tsar (Ivan the Terrible - by which name the opera is sometimes known). Unknown to all is that Olga is in fact the Tsar's daughter (by an illicit affair ... Read More:

I didn't think this would be 'my kind' of opera - I usually prefer something more lyrical. This is just one of the most fantastic, disturbing, challenging, exhilarating, exhausting things I've ever listened to. Gorchakova is absolutely breath-taking, in fact it could almost be distracting, to sit and wonder how on earth she manages it all. The final scene in the convent is just beyond words, I felt like I was sitting jaw-dropped for a long time afterwards. It will be a long time before I listen to this opera again, not because I didn't like it but because it is such a profound experience. Phew!

This opera is full of glorious music which is what we expect from Tchaikovsky. The story is excellent and the music makes it all the more exciting. Theres is a real sense of suspense building through the opera climaxing in the death of Herman. Once again the Kirov gives an absolutely fantastic performance, with Gegan Grigorian giving a very expressive Herman. The rest of the casting is fautless and the orchestral playing is just phenomenal. Valery Gergiev is a god in the world of opera conducting.

The Philips Kirov series has been one of delights of recent years. And perhaps the highlight of this project has been the wonderful Rimsky-Korsakov recordings: his operas at long last reaching a wider public, and demonstrating what a fine composer he was. I cannot imagine a finer advocate of these works than Gergiev and his marvellous Kirov ensemble.

Valery Gergiev and Alexander Toradze here present lovely interpretations of Prokofiev's 5. They're all notable for their stunning and thoughtful piano work from Toradze, and for the typically lively, fun pace of the Kirov Orchestra. However the recording itself is boxy and marrs the collection slightly - anyone who has seen the Kirov live could be disappointed. The playing is prehaps better than Askenazy's popular set but not the sound quality, which could've been livelier.

This is the first Russian opera I heard,(i wanted to hear more of it having played Polvotsian Dances in my Symphony Orchestra). Although it is not a bad piece there is something missing that makes it stand out from all other Operas written at the time,(this is not the fault of the performers but of the opera itself). However there is that truly Russian sense in the music. As expected Valery Gergiev brings of a faultless performance, and even manages to put life into the weaker scenes of the opera. Glaina Gorchakova sparkles as always and the rest of the casting is more than satisfactory,
