Hey, can this lady sing!!!
Pumped through expensive speakers on my old steam driven amplifier and CD player, her voice rocked the room. It was like being visited by half a dozen different women. Cleopatra popped in a couple of times to tell me her woes. Alminera sang of her despair (far, far better than most I have heard). Medea appeared to tell me of her love and her jealousy. I thought that Armida's anger was going to bring the walls down - boy that girl is ANGRY. Semele, falling under Zeus' spell captivated me and was captivated. One, of course, shouldn't be sexist but to be treated to the sight of such a beautiful woman appearing as all these beautiful women would, indeed, be a pleasure. I, unfortunately, can't afford Glyndebourne ... Read More:

To be charitable, I shall start with saying that the performance of the Grand Motet In Convertendo is up the the usual standard of excellence one associates with William Christie. As a bonus comes a comprehensive - as far as a DVD in concerned - documentary, despite the silly chit-chat between two surplus-to-requirement Deus ex Machina characters. Otherwise - very poor general presentation - no reference to the vocal Soloists in the Motet - either in the booklet, or in the Biographies bonus on the DVD. If the Soloists are good enough for W Christie, they should be good enough for Opus Arte to say something about them. This is disrespect to the Artists, and disregard where the consumer [probably not The Consumer to this label] is concerned. Nor is there ... Read More:

Opera in English doesn't just have to be Benjamin Britten and
questionable translations of the old favourites. Three hundred
years ago, Henry Purcell was dragging the art-form towards new
heights of emotional expressiveness whilst always remembering
to put in a few good tunes for the drunken groundlings to sing
along with. "King Arthur" runs the gamut of English styles,
beginning with a verse anthem (admittedly to the Saxon god
Woden!), going through masque and rowdy patriotism, and peaking
with one of the most ravishingly beautiful soprano arias ever written.

A quick warning is perhaps in order; King Arthur is semi-opera,
mixing spoken and sung sections in the same mould as The Magic ... Read More:

This is the special edition re-issue of the 1999 Christie Harmonia Mundi recording. It comes in a special book format. It is a sheer triumph as many have said. I consider it the best recording of Messiah ever. It won a Choc Award from the French magazine "Le monde de la Musique". Sheer perfection. A must. The performance follows the score of Handel's later year modifications incorporating changes made in 1745 (the sound is gone out) and changes made in 1750 (thou art gone up on high). The performances of the soloists are ravishing; there is no better version available for the soloists parts. The other definitive recordings are: 1)for its overall quality ( no star soloists as here) is the Parrott Traverner Choir (Virgin) recording of the Foundling Hospital ... Read More:

This period instrument Flute is a triumph. William Christie eschews the usual headlong period instrument style for a gentle, almost whistful performance. Some of his speeds are actually quite slow but heaviness is avoided as it is conducted with lightness. The playing is good and so is the recording, with a strong all-round cast. This is probably the period instrument version to have.
