They don't come much better than this. A delight from start to finish; and I would hardly call myself a fan of this opera - well, not until I saw this version.

Buy it.

I was first introduced to Rossini's overtures when I heard the Thieving Magpie Overture. I was struck by the sheer majesty of the march at the beginning, and the excitement and vibrancy achieved by the crescendos and climaxes. Rossini was a true genius at his art, and this CD attests to that. They are numerous recordings of Rossini's overtures which only contain the most famous ones - this one has all of them, so that listening to them is not simply a matter of 'name that tune'. Strangely, the overtures are not put in chronological order, which is rather irritating at times, but the CD redeems itself with Rossini's genius, the masterful interpretations by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the excellent sleeve notes. The earliest overtures or ... Read More:

This is an enjoyable performance of a lively, colourful and comical opera based on the fairy tale Cinderella - complete with ugly sisters, Dandini and so on. The American mezzo Frederica von Stade makes a fetching Cinders, and the Mexican tenor Francisco Araiza is the handsome prince. It's a La Scala production conducted by Abbado and a jolly good show. But buyers should be aware that this is a film and not a stage performance. Therefore the singers are miming and - inevitably - slightly out of synch at times. When it comes to opera on DVD, I like to hear the creak of the floorboards and feel the heat of the crowd.

I relied on some excellent reviews on Amazon.com before buying this. I did not regret it. For an opera lover this is the perfect antidote to the more usual murder, suicide or agonizing deaths that characterize most operas.
I will not repeat the detail of the .com reviews. This is a traditional production where a kitchen looks like a kitchen and a palace looks just like it should. No abstract shapes and meaningless backdrops. There are no weaknesses here. The opera builds to a truly magnificent close and a stunning performance by Ruxandra Donose in the title role. Fine detail in the picture and excellent sound quality - if you collect opera on DVD this has to be your next purchase.

This work is a joy from start to end, but do not expect to experience any serious epiphany of a religious nature along the way. Apart from the opening dolorosa, it's pure operatic vocal display and lots of catchy tunes to boot: it's as if Rossini has done his duty and is now off on another bel canto romp up Calvary way. This performance is good - not outstanding - and the Philharmonia is marshalled efficiently by the great Giulini. However, for a more unbridled approach (which is what this essentially sunny setting needs) go for Kertesz and Pavarotti on Decca. It's all a hoot anyway - but wonderfully melodic and hummable.

There's not a lot to add to the other reviews and all I can do is endorse the very positive comments of my peers.

This CD is all about the lyrical quality of Juan Diego's voice and Rossini is a great vehicle through which to demonstrate it.

Tenor singing at it's very, very best - you won't hear anything to top this at the moment.

I agree with others who suggest that the addition of a duet may have broken the recital up a little but no matter - buy with confidence, it's great.

I bought this version as we are to perform it soon, accompanied by piano and harmonium only - so I thought this would be helpful. However, I find the chorus seems to be made up of a whole bunch of soloists - all competing to have the most vibrato in their voices! Not the best way to listen to choral music and certainly not easy to pick out individual lines. Some of it seems to be much slower than the tempi indicated in the score too. I've just ordered a different version (Decca), having heard it elsewhere and enjoyed it so much more.
