This is the opera that shot Georgiu to stardom. It's easy to see why, with her combination of acting, looks and singing. Violetta is a very difficult role, it places very different demands on the singer in each act. Georgiu isn't quite ideal for act 1, but after that she's really in her element. You can practically see the paternal pride in Solti's face as he watches his young protegee bloom. Surely the definitive Traviata.

Well I would have to disagree with the previous reviewers. Of course, it's all a matter of personal taste, but I was quite disappointed (having read the first review before I purchased) with this recording. I thought the pace a little slow -- ponderous, even -- at times, especially the "Te decet hymnus" passage. And the soloists, who look so promising on paper, failed to deliver, to my mind. The singers are supposed to serve the music, not the other way around. Having said that, Gheorghiu does hit some beautiful notes. I'm afraid that Daniela Barcellona's voice has a tinny quality, and Roberto Alagna may have been having an off day. Picky of me? Probably, but I expect more of such a line-up.
The orchestra and the chorus, on the other ... Read More:

In many ways, this was Sutherland's return to form, for the much criticised mooning is largely absent. The voice is firm, rich, and she's fully in control of it. And for me that's the first problem: There's just no getting away from the fact that here is a very mature, matronly heroine, who sounds in the pink of health. Violetta is supposed to be young and desperately ill...

Some singers allow little vocal frailties into their singing to bring the character alive (Cotrubas, Gheorghiu, Callas). Sutherland never does, and her attempts at being expressive strike me as...manufactured. She sounds like a not-so-young diva enjoying a big sing. But in a role she's grown out of. The artful drawing on the cover, which attempts to take back the years, says ... Read More:

This superb CD was originally recorded in 1971 and to prove it, an impossibly young-looking Luciano Pavarotti adorns the front cover. He is marvellous as the randy Duke of Mantova, as is Sherrill Milnes, as a suitably malevolent Rigoletto. But although Joan Sutherland is sometimes criticised - unfairly, to my mind - for being a rather intimidating Gilda when, by rights the character should be petite, shy and retiring , I think it matters not one jot. If the listener wants to hear a skinny bird squeaking `Caro Nome', he'd better not listen to this, because Sutherland's magnificent voice is everything. Right down the cast list is Kiri te Kanawa, giving a very nice rendition as the saucy Countess di Ceprano and the conspirators - Messrs Marullo, Borsa, Ceprano & ... Read More:

You'll never walk alone, sung as it was originally intended by the great Mario Lanza. A perfect collection for new comers or fans looking for the best of Mario Lanza. A track for every occassion.

Verdi's Aida comes thrillingly to life in this splendid production from the Metropolitan Opera. Aprile Millo is in excellent voice in the title role and sings with great musicality throughout. Indeed this sense of musical values being the most important is reflected in the fine performances of the rest of this all star cast most notably Placido Domingo and Dolora Zajick as Radames and Amneris respectively. The production is old fashioned but attractive and the physical acting is rudimentary but the vocal acting gets prizes all round.

This was a favourite performance for me on video and is now excellently transferred onto DVD (sub titles optional). First rate.

Verdi - La Traviata (Netrebko, Villazon, Rizzi) [2006]

No, the set does not have the glamour of the Met or Covent garden, but the acting and singing easily make up for that .... if you doubt my view, see the reviews for what is the same DVD except that it a 2 disc version (the 2nd disc is behind the scenes etc. for those who want it, otherwise, the same). Netrebko and Villason sing beautifully, which is confirmed by the standing ovation at the end of the Opera. Reviewers at the concert spoke of her (Netrebko's) 'bell-like purity of tone' and 'golden gleam of her voice'.

Worth buying then!? I would say definitely 'yes' but, not if you need to have a sumptious setting on the stage!?

A non-Italian 'Aida' that ranks head and shoulders above many of its competitors, this is a performance to cherish. Solti's grip on the orchestra is total and he presents an atmospheric and urgent interpretation of the opera. The end of Act 1 scene 2 is electric with religious fervour. There, Vickers rides the full orchestra with ease and elsewhere is a committed and moving Radames - not everyone's favourite tenor maybe but an artist of blazing intensity. Price builds her part through mostly vocal means, and what a voice it was - controlled and secure throughout its range with a distinctive smoky timbre that is perfectly appropriate to the role. Gorr is excellent also as the vengeful Amneris though I miss the use of chest register to emphasis the drama. Merrill is his usual ... Read More:

The original CD has now been deleted but this reissue is almost half the price of the original so cant complain. This is a fantastic production on every level.Four superb and individualistic soloists, the LSO in fine fettle and the conducting talent of an inspired Bernstein, added to that is the superb acoustics very ably recorded too.Its a shatteringly great performance and not to me missed at this super bargain price.

Excellent singing throughout from a very good cast. Sutherland sounds very young and shines throughout. Bergonzi is a brilliant partner to Sutherland and Merrill is memorable. Well recorded and very well conducted this is excellent value for money, a really strong Traviata.
