This has been eagerly awaited after hearing the Ebene perform the Debussy and the Ravel live at this summer's Salzburg Festival. They are a young group of musicians who also appear on the European jazz scene. This brings to their playing a buzz which may be linked to their ability to improvise freely. However, when playing these pieces there is a discipline evident in their interpretation as well. Hear also their interpretation of the first three Barok Quartets and subline live recordings of Haydn.

This review must, I suppose, serve two purposes. If on the one hand you do not know the Ravel or Debussy string quartets, buy this cd immediately. This is music of the highest quality, written by composers at the height of their powers, which demonstrates their unique gifts for melody and colour. For those who might be comparing different discs, then I can make the same recommendation as above, and without the slightest reservation. The Belcea Quartet are one of the most talented new groups performing this repertoire, and they are rapidly establishing themselves as serious competition for the older and more famous groups out there. This is an excellent performance.

This Naxos double CD is effectively a reworking of the original single CD release `The Best of Debussy', expanded to include more of the composer's music then attractively packaged with new artwork and a card slip-case cover showing an amusing caricature of the composer. As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composer's work will inevitably be omitted - Debussy incidentally wrote around 227 works so the 23 pieces on these CDs represent only a small proportion of his lifetime works. There are however over 2 and a half hours of music here to be enjoyed and it's a good cross-section of Debussy's music. This is a superb introduction to Debussy's music. Great performances, especially La Mer which is totally mesmerising.

The first surprising thing about this set is the fact that debussy only wrote this relatively small amount of solo piano music. The second is that so few of these are what one might call "famous". Yes, there's good old Flaxen Hair and Arabesque and Golliwog's Cake Walk, and so on ... but you also get a host of utterly surreal and enchanting pieces such as his Estampes and Images. Playing the whole set through from start to finish is a suitably intense way to penetrate Debussy's unusual mind, as each piece is completely different from all the others. The quality of playing is superb, as the pianist seems to have captured something of the period and situation in which they were written - an admirable achievement. Read More:

Wonderful interpretations of these masterpieces of impressionism, especially the first set of 'Images' and the Preludes. Never too harsh with the colours, but never afraid to be bright and fresh either. The essential debussy solo interpretations.
