In a recent BBC3 "CD Review" broadcast, Alexandra Wilson made a gallant attempt to achieve the impossible task of choosing amongst forty or so recordings of "La Boheme" - and while I agreed with her ultimate choice of the Beecham recording with Bjorling, Merrill and De Los Angeles, I have rather more regard for this discarded Karajan recording simply because Pavarotti's voice, in its prime, as she herself put it, "runs through the recording like a golden seam". The rest of the cast is wonderful, too, although Karajan's love for the score is manifested in a rather deliberately "beautiful" approach and thereby slightly undercuts the drama. I cannot be without either recording of this eternally youthful and moving opera, and although Freni was ... Read More:

Sorry, this might upset some other reviewers and 'purists' but I have to say as good as this recording is, and it is, callas does give a good performance, but it doesn't light a candle to the 1962 Karajan recording on decca legends with Leontyne price as Tosca she is absolutely stunning in the role, I defy anyone not to be moved and have the hairs go up on the back of their neck when they listen to her vissi d'arte(my ultimate favourite opera aria), so do yourself a favour and get that cd now! You won't regret it.

This has got to be in the top three of all opera's available on CD.And I've heard several hundred. No other cast comes close, no other conductor comes close, Pavvy and Mirelli are at the top of their game, and all, and I mean all, of the cast are in excellent voice, and it has soul, baby!.Alas I only have it on tape, but I fully understand why it remains top whack in price, and will remain so, for ever and ever, 'cos it's worth every centime!

This Naxos double CD is effectively a reworking of the original single CD release `The Best of Puccini', expanded to include more of the composer's music then attractively packaged with new artwork and a card slip-case cover showing an amusing caricature of the composer.

As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composer's work will inevitably be omitted although surprisingly, given his popularity, Puccini wrote just 38 works and 12 of these appear in various abbreviated forms on these CDs so the 2 and a half hours of music here give a good cross-section of his compositional style.

The sleeve notes are helpful for those wanting a little more than these highlights, for they provide recommended further listening (all ... Read More:

LSC&O Alagna, Hampson under Pappano shoud be good and it is! The recording eliminates that annoying hiss you often get from choirs, so much so that I wondered how they actually managed it (the choir that is as they all seem to have a tendency to lisp and hiss in the flesh) but that aside its a Glorious performance.
Lively joyous tempos singing and playing of the highest order....
The preludio is worth having and the Crisantemi has long been a favorite of mine and here is as good as anywhere.
No quibbles at all other than it could make our local choirs sound a little below par!

It is the late 1800's. An American naval captain, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton (Plácido Domingo) is stationed in Japan. As is tradition he has a girl in every port. That is except Japan. So he is matched up with a poverty stricken teen Cio-Cio-San, known as Butterfly (Mirella Freni.) Butterfly dumps her old religion (which infuriates her relatives) and clings to Pinkerton. Naturally the day will come when Pinkerton will need a proper American wife. So how does Cio-Cio react? (Puccini music at his best)

At first this looks like a 60's movie with voiceover. Placido looks a little like an Italian Hercules. But as time grows on you realize that they actually did a pretty good job of staging. There are plenty of implications that are not in the ... Read More:

9.Puccini - La Boheme (Levine, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra) [1977] starring: Luciano Pavarotti

Luciano Pavarotti at his absolute best, which is truly something to hear. Renata Scotto may not be everyone's ideal Mimi- she looks too much the sturdy healthy sort of girl, and her acting is terrible, but this is quibbling. For those who remember only the later, concert Pavarotti, or for those who have been disappointed with his acting in other things, this is the one to watch to see what all the fuss is about.
I would recommend skipping the Tony Randall [?] intro, its a bit cringe-worthy.

I am afraid I agree with Mel C. I came to this video expecting great things from Milnes, whom I much admire, only to be gravely disappointed and unmoved. Kabaivanska is adequte, but no more than that: on balance I prefer Behrens (and I don't much like her in the role!) Domingo, as always, as Cavardossi, does a great job and the settings and decent matching of soundtrack to film do add to the overall effect. But the ideal modern 'Tosca' has yet to come: perhaps I have been spoiled by Callas/Gobbi/Pretre.
