I had the Peter and the Wolf album, with Richard Baker narrating, when I was little and it is one of the best things that I can remember from my childhood. It is still one of my favourite pieces of classical music and listening to it still makes me feel slightly scared of that wolf! Together with Richard Baker's calm narration it is just brilliant. I would recommend this to any parent for their child - it will keep them quiet for hours!

I bought this partly because it was that cheapest box set of the seven symphonies and it also contained Lieutenant Kije, and partly because they are played by the Berlin Philharmonic. The recordings are crisp and clear, even when downloaded to my basic MP3 player.

This is an excellent CD to introduce young children to classical music generally , and ballet music in particular. If you are thinking of taking young children to see either of these ballets, then get this CD first and Brian Cant will tell the stories, and the orchestra will play the main themes.
Higly recomended and at a good low price.

This is a great value CD, with three excellent versions of classic works by great composers. I have lost my copy of this and am purchasing a replacement - I have spent ages looking for this recording as I was so pleased with it originally.

From the first ominous notes you anticipate a dramatic piece. While there is drama and tension, however, the dynamic mood of the work is optimistic and inspirational. A notable propaganda film prefiguring the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Prokofiev's score is a rousing appeal to the Russian people to unite and fight, not simply confident of victory, but imbued with a spiritual conviction in their destiny.

Though written to complement the film, Prokofiev's score is an eminently enjoyable piece in its own right - to be enhanced, perhaps, by a viewing of the film, giving you the ability to relate the visual and the musical dynamic. It is a work of rapidly flowing and fluctuating mood, its pace dictated by the crafting of ... Read More:

This compilation represents good value for money and at just over 77 minutes the playing time is rather longer than the 1 hour suggested by the previous reviewer.
Those who are new to Prokofiev will probably only recognise 'The Montagues and the Capulets' from the 'Romeo and Juliet' ballet and 'Troika' from 'Lieutenant Kije', a piece regularly used on television at Christmas time because of its sleigh theme. Some people may be surprised that 'Peter and the Wolf' isn't present even in part. I feel however that this is a work best heard in its entirety and at around 25-30 minutes would take up too much disc space leaving only little room for other music. The other pieces that are present may not be as well known as the forementioned but they're ... Read More:

7.Prokofiev: The Piano Concertos by: Vladimir Ashkenazy London Symphony Orchestra André Previn

Ashkenazy together with Andre Previn conducting the LSO, give some of the most exhilarating performances of these piano concertos. The 3rd concerto is widely available recorded by several other top artists, and Ashkenazy's remains amongst the best out there. The the added bonus here is the fact that the same dedication and depth of understanding and communicating the music is applied to the other 4 less well known concerti, and to have them all in one budget double CD set makes this an absolute must have for Prokofiev fans, and fans of virtuoso piano playing! My personal favourite in this set is No.2 with its dark, brooding and sometimes shocking quality. It's a big contract when compared to the more lyrical and mercurial No.3

8.Prokofiev: Symphonies no 1 & 5 by: Herbert Von Karajan

Karajan and the BPO expose layers of this music that are often missing in other interpretations. This is a stunning CD with wonderfully harsh percussion in the 5th. My only reservation is the under-emphasis of the piano in its finale. For this, perhaps, the collector needs a second (probably Russian) conductor and orchestra!

Sometimes music becomes something else, it becomes something so gripping that it takes over your mind and intoxicates your brain.

Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet does just that.

This is some of the most emotive music you've ever heard, and presented in excellent quality.

"Dance of the Knights" is my favourite piece, I know nothing of the technical side of music. All I know is that I love Prokofiev and that I can listen to this and be absorbed by it.

Whilst listening to this you can hear signature pieces very similar to those found in Peter and the Wolf, so after listening to this you become hungry for yet more Prokofiev!!!

5 stars and well worth it.

The most important work on this disc is the Liszt Piano Sonata in B minor. This work, composed in 1853, stands as one of the greatest piano works of all time. Its challenging technical demands and considerable involvement required from the soloist make it a key work in the establishment of any virtuoso pianist. All the greats, from Richter and Rubinstein to Ashkenazy and de Larrocha, have played and recorded it in their careers.

Martha Argerich, perhaps the greatest pianist of our time, is perfectly at home in this piece. Her playing "speaks" of an artist who is capable of exploring the full range of emotions on the keyboard. Unlike other contemporaries, such as Bolet and de Larrocha, as eminent as they are, Argerich establishes herself on an echelon ... Read More:
