Britten's 'Ceremony of Carols' is a definitive work which has spawned more ghastly recordings than almost any other in the choral cannon! This, however, is far from being one of those.

In 1966, the ultimate recording of the work, by St John's College Choir with Maria Robles on harp was released. Every recording since then has been a bitter disappointment - until this one.

Although the vocal attack perhaps lacks the edge that St John's had (which wouldn't be hard since the continental voice training which George Guest used for half the boys gave a unique sound) this succeeds where so many before have failed. The tuning is excellent and the diction spot on. The very slight 'springing' of the rhythm in the processional ... Read More:

The review by Klingsor Tristan is spot on and he is right to be so enthusiastic. The work itself has a claim to be one of the greatest works composed in the 20th Century and the searing commitment of all the performers in this first recording is almost palpable. The latest remastering eliminates almost all hiss and exposes clearly some of the remarkable quiet scoring of the work as well as delivering speaker-shaking cataclysmic Decca sound in sections like the "Dies Irae." The murmuring choral crescendo in the "Sanctus" is the best achieved on disc. Quite wonderful.

I have particular interest in the main piece on this CD, Britten's 'St. Nicolas' cantata, because a choir I sing in will be doing it later this year with our local professional chamber orchestra; interestingly, a previous performance of it by this group was so successful that a repeat has been requested. Britten, of course, wrote the work for amateur chorus and a professional tenor soloist, in this case his long-time lover, Peter Pears. Enough time has now passed that, although Pears/Britten recorded the work, it is appropriate and welcome that new forces give it a go. Philip Langridge, the tenor here, is actually a better-sounding singer than Pears, although no one would ever question Pears's musicianship. And I say that even as I am one of those who ... This is a 1969 studio recording directed by Joan Cross, who created Ellen Orford in the original stage production in 1945. It is in remarkably good sound and colour picture quality and has transferred well to DVD. The opera is staged well in limited studio facilities, in simple but effective sets (which only occasionally appear a little cardboardy!). Peter Pears here recreates his central performance of the lead role - it's a great shame he didn't commit this earlier in his career. Whilst it is great to have a visual record of him, he lacks the power and brute force for the role which we are more accustomed to seeing in modern productions. He looks a highly improbably fisherman - described in the opening scene as "callous, brutal and coarse" - rather he ... Read More:

This recording of the Young person's guide to the orchestra takes you right into the concert hall, the excitment, invigoration and sheer power of the recording leaves you breathless.

The transition of music from live performance onto disc is not an easy one and only a handful of recordings achieve it - but this is one of them

This is a really lovely recording - the singing is sublime, the music is wonderful, tuneful but eccentrically Britten.

There have been many productions of Grimes around the world and a good few recordings made since this first one was committed to disc nearly half a century ago. From our perspective in the 21st Century it is hard to recall the huge impact made by the first production at Sadlers' Wells in 1946 and by this recording just a decade or so later. It's now easier to see the antecedents and ancestors of the piece - Verdi, Mahler, even Mozart. At the time it seemed a really revolutionary piece, not only for British but also for worldwide opera.

The recording, too, was something new. This was the first time that John Culshaw and his Decca team had fully implemented their ideas for making a real production out of a stereo opera recording. The original ... Read More:
