Ayre is an extraordinary mix of musical style, culture and language. Golijov's achievement (aided by his background as a Jewish Argentinian of East European origin who has studied in Jerusalem, Spain and the US) is in showing us how much divided cultures have in common. A Sephardic lullaby, a Palestinian poem, a Christian Arab hymn - this is a real musical and cultural exploration. I suggest a free copy for anyone involved in peace negotiations in the Middle East. Dawn Upshaw is magnificent. The only downside is that Breio's Folk Songs seem tame in comparison.

I'm not a great fan of classical singing - too much warbling. But Cathy Berberian has a voice as clear as a mountain stream and as powerful as the sea. This CD was bought as an experiment because of her (deserved) reputation to be able to sing virtually anything. The CD contains the very modern Berio piece, which was a revelation not only for the singing but structure as well, and Berio's folk song arrangements for Cathy. Some of these are simply amazing. Her vocal range is huge and every note is musical. The treatment of these songs displays an awesome musical intelligence. This will not be the last recording of hers that I buy on the basis of the contents of this CD. She really could sing the contents of a telephone directory and make music. ... Read More:
