This is an intriguing disc which I have lived with for more than two years now. The last composer to sit down and write six string quartets for a single commission was Beethoven with his Opus 18 set. Close on two hundred years later, this antique concept is revived for "Mad Max" Maxwell Davies. Naxos have been bold and commissioned ten quartets - hats off to them for their courage, and it's great to report that there's some very interesting music that is flowing from their initiative.
Max has enjoyed a remarkably varied career as a composer, with some disorienting staged and semi-staged pieces early on, some profound and intense smaller scale music (e.g. the wonderful Ave Maris Stella) in the 1970's and 1980's, a big foray into writing ... Read More:

This is the third disc in the projected set of five dedicated to Maxwell "Mad Max" Davies' set of ten Naxos Quartets. As with the previous two discs, there's a wealth of invention on display from the composer, but first this time I'd like to pay a particular tribute to the Maggini. New music is never easy to project. Having Max on hand to talk through what the components of the music are designed to do must be a vast advantage, and it's clear that the Maggini have active input into the finished product, convincing Max to rewrite the parts they find unplayable. But the Maggini put themselves at the service of the music in a near-exemplary fashion. Time and again they embrace the culture of the writing and deliver a quality of sound that brings ... Alexander Goehr has commented about Maxwell Davies' startling engagement to write ten quartets for Naxos that "it's too good to be true. One can't write 10 quartets. One can, with luck, write one that is half-way reasonable". Max is well on the way to proving Goehr wrong - he's written nine of the ten and there's no sign of the fountain drying up.
There's nonetheless something in Goehr's comment; these two quartets give a flavour of both aspects of the question. The Third is a strong piece, written when Max was incensed with his native country's "illegal" decision over the Iraq war. Its four movements clearly draw heavily on the mainstream classical structural mould; Max is keen to encourage the listener to hear his quartet music as having ... Read More:

The missa parvula has a sparse texture, very much modelled on Gregorian chant whereas the other mass in this recording is less so, more complex with echoes of French music including Messiaen in the organ parts. This is an altogether very listenable CD. It did not engage me as much as MacMillan's Westminster Mass or indeed the masses of Roxanna Panufnik, but maybe thats because "Max" is an outsider to catholic liturgy whereas the latter are very much insiders and understand the inner workings of the liturgy.

The slow movement isn't without its meandering moments and sometimes all the glittery percussion gets a bit clotted but basically this is one of PMD's most arresting pieces. The last movement has a tremendous urgency and it's good to hear Sir Simon Rattle on such good form-i think his tastes in new music were spot on back in the 70's
It's worth supplementing this disc with some other Maxwell Davies highlights:Worldes Bliss (the composer conducting) and sir Charles Groves conducting a panic stricken Philharmonia Orchestra in the 2nd Tavener Fantasia.A brilliant account.

This has to be one of the most outstanding and daring classical work of its time. The 'pop' world was experiencing Sargeant Pepper's etc. and 'Max' was doing his thing.
